East Coast

Nilaveli

A long east coast beach about 20 km from Trincomalee and the usual base for Pigeon Island National Park. Its dry, calm months run from about February to September, the reverse of the south coast.

Is Nilaveli worth visiting?

Quick answer: Yes, if you travel between about February and September. Nilaveli is a long beach about 20 km from Trincomalee on the east coast, and it is the usual base for Pigeon Island National Park. Its dry months are the wet months on the south coast, so it is the beach to pick for a summer trip. Skip it from October to January, when most of its yearly rain falls.

Where is Nilaveli?

Nilaveli is a coastal resort town in Trincomalee District, in Sri Lanka's Eastern Province. SLTDA places it "about 20 km" from Trincomalee and adds that it "used to be a popular tourist destination", a reminder that tourism on this coast is still rebuilding (SLTDA tourist attractions). SLTDA lists Nilaveli in its East Coast Resort Region, with Trincomalee, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay (SLTDA development projects).

On this site it sits in the east coast region. Trincomalee is the nearest town for banks, the harbour and the Navy whale cruises, and the Koneswaram Temple on the headland is a short road trip away.

When is the best time to visit Nilaveli?

February to September is the dry window. The table uses the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for Trincomalee, the nearest long-record weather station (WMO normals, Sri Lanka stations). "Rain days" counts days with at least 1 mm of rain.

Dec339.015.028.8 (84)23.8 (75)

Two things stand out. First, June is the driest month, with just 25.9 mm over about 2 rain days. Second, May to August is very hot, with average highs of 35 C (95 F) or more. Plan beach time for the morning and late afternoon in those months.

Sri Lanka Tourism's beach page explains the pattern in one line: "the north east winds make the south western coast sunny and the sea calm from November to March", while "the South West winds make the East Coast waters quiet" (Sri Lanka Tourism, beaches). In other words, when the south coast is wet, Nilaveli is usually dry, and the other way round.

Should you choose Nilaveli or the south coast for your month?

This is the question most trip planners get stuck on. The table compares Trincomalee with Galle, the south coast station, on the same WMO normals. "Better" here only means less average rain, not a forecast.

Can you visit Pigeon Island from Nilaveli?

Yes, by boat, with a park permit. Pigeon Island National Park is a marine national park off this coast, protected by the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC). That means rules on where boats land and what you can touch, and a permit for each visitor.

Can you see whales near Nilaveli?

Yes, from May to October, on the Navy cruise from Trincomalee. The Sri Lanka Navy's schedule page lists cruises from Trincomalee from May to October, sailing every Saturday and Sunday at 07:00 from Nicholson Cove pier, Naval Dockyard, with a snack pack and soft drinks (Sri Lanka Navy schedules). The Navy's charts for its larger group cruises from Trincomalee run past Nilaweli (its spelling) and Pigeon Island.

The cruise lasts 5 hours. LKR figures use the Central Bank's buying rate for 16 October 2026 and are rounded. The Navy's southern cruises leave from Galle from November to April, so the two coasts split the year between them. Our whale watching in Sri Lanka page compares them.

How do you get to Nilaveli?

By road from Trincomalee for the last part. SLTDA puts Nilaveli about 20 km from Trincomalee, and it describes Trincomalee as a port city about 110 miles from Kandy. Most travellers hire a car with a driver, or take a train or bus to Trincomalee and finish by road.

Sri Lanka Railways' fare table lists the line to Trincomalee from Colombo Fort (fare PDF, read 18 October 2026). The file is dated July 2022, so treat the fares as a guide and check at the counter.

Nilaveli has no station of its own, so you finish the trip by road from Trincomalee. We tried to check train times on Sri Lanka Railways' online schedule on 18 October 2026, but the site's security certificate had expired, so we did not use it. Ask at the station or call the railway's 1971 line before you plan around a train. Our getting around Sri Lanka guide explains how to check trains and buses, and the east coast itinerary shows how Nilaveli fits a longer route.

Where should you stay in Nilaveli?

The beach has hotels along the shore, but we did not find room rates published on official or hotel pages that we could quote today, because hotel sites only show a price once you enter dates. So this page gives no price. Two checks help before you book:

  • Ask what runs on your dates. If you travel between October and January, ask whether the restaurant, pool and boat trips are running, because that is the wet season here.
  • Ask where the Pigeon Island boats leave from. Then pick a room close to that point to save a transfer on the morning of your trip.
