How do you get from Colombo to Ella? (Checked 28 October 2026)
Quick answer: By road it is about 203 km and 3 hours 41 minutes with no traffic from Colombo Fort, on our OpenStreetMap sample of 28 October 2026. The route leaves the city on the Southern Expressway, then follows the A8 and the A4 through Ratnapura district and climbs on the A16. There is no official Colombo to Ella bus fare; the National Transport Commission lists Colombo to Badulla buses (routes 99 and 21-6), but its table does not show if they stop at Ella. This page makes no train claim.
This page is for people starting in Colombo city. If you are landing at the airport, use our Colombo airport to Ella guide, which has the airport taxi card and bus plan. If you are coming up the coast, our south coast to Ella transport guide covers that side.

What does the road route look like?
The sample returned one route from Colombo Fort. The roads are named as the map names them, with distances rounded.
| Stage | Road named by the map | About how far |
|---|---|---|
| Out of the city | Pannipitiya Road (B47) and local roads | The first 22 km |
| Fast section | Southern Expressway (E01) | About 14 km, ending about 36 km from the start, about 39 minutes in |
| Foothills | A8 Horana Road, then A8 Ratnapura Road | About 56 km, from about 37 km to about 93 km |
| Long middle section | A4 Ratnapura to Wellawaya Road | About 80 km, from about 93 km to about 175 km |
| The climb | A16 Haputale Road, Badulla Road, Beragala to Hali-Ela Road and Badulla to Bandarawela Road | About 25 km, from about 175 km to about 200 km |
| Last stretch | A23 Wellawaya to Ella Road | About 3 km |
Those distances are rounded sums of the map's own steps, so treat them as a guide to the shape of the trip and not as signs you will see on the road. The expressway is a small part of the total. About 80 km of the 203 km, roughly 40 percent, is on the A4. We have no tolls or expressway charges to quote, and we do not guess them.
Why is this different from the 196 km on our map guide?
Our Sri Lanka map and distances guide lists Colombo to Ella at 196 km and 3 hours 38 minutes, from an OpenStreetMap sample of 24 October 2026. This page uses Colombo Fort as the start and the sample of 28 October 2026 and gets 203.0 km and 3 hours 41 minutes. The start point and the end point in a map tool change the result by a few kilometres. The 7 km gap is not a sign that the road changed. Use the start that is closest to where you will be.
What does the bus cost?
The NTC tables have no row that ends at Ella. The nearest rows end at Badulla.
| Route | From and to | Normal | Semi-luxury | Air-conditioned luxury |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 99 | Colombo to Badulla | Rs 1,117 | Rs 1,676 | Rs 2,131 |
| 21-6 | Colombo to Badulla | Rs 1,100 | Rs 1,650 | Not listed |
| EX 1-74/31-2 | Makumbura to Badulla | Rs 2,700 | Not listed | Not listed |
Route 21-6 is Rs 17 cheaper than route 99 on the normal fare. That is our arithmetic. The tables list route ends only. They do not say which road each bus takes, where it leaves in Colombo or when, or whether it calls at Ella, so we cannot say these fares apply to Ella or that any bus stops in the town. Before you pay, ask the conductor if the bus calls at Ella and what the fare to Ella is. The expressway row starts at the Makumbura multimodal centre, not in Colombo Fort, so you would need to get there first.
We found no official fare for a taxi. Ask for the full price in writing, and ask if tolls and the driver's food and stay are included.
Should you split the trip?
It is a long day. With no traffic, the drive alone is about 3 hours 41 minutes, and with any stop it is longer, so many people split it. Our pages for the places on or near the way can help you pick a break:
- Ratnapura is the town the A8 Ratnapura Road is named for. See the weather section below before planning a stop.
- Wellawaya gives its name to the A4 Ratnapura to Wellawaya Road on the map.
- Haputale and Bandarawela are hill towns near the last climb.
We have not measured the distance from Colombo to those towns on this route, so we do not give times to them. If you want a break, ask your driver where they would stop and why.
If you are in Kandy and not in Colombo, our Kandy to Ella by road guide is the better page.
What will Ella feel like when you arrive?
Our hill country altitude and weather guide puts Ella at about 1,041 m, and gives Colombo at 7 m. It uses Bandarawela, about 12 km away by road, as the weather station for Ella, because Ella has none. Bandarawela's annual mean temperature is 21.0 C against 27.9 C in Colombo. Its rainfall normals are 347.1 mm in October and 338.1 mm in November. That is the wettest part of the year at both places in our guide. These are long-term averages and not a forecast. If you arrive late in the day after a wet drive, pack a light layer and rain protection at the top of your bag, and tell your hotel your arrival time.
What is the weather and landslide check for this route? (Checked 28 October 2026)
- Landslide warning: the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) landslide early warning LEWM-27-10-2026-1600-34, published by the Disaster Management Centre, is valid from 16:00 on 27 October to 16:00 on 28 October 2026. It puts Level 3 (Red) on Openayake, Ayagama, Kuruwita, Ratnapura, Pelmadulla and Elapatha in Ratnapura district, Level 2 (Amber) on Godakawela, Eheliyagoda, Nivithigala, Kalawana, Kiriella and Balangoda, and Level 1 (Yellow) on Seethawaka and Padukka in Colombo district. Our route sample uses the A8 Ratnapura Road and the A4 through Ratnapura district, going by the road names OSRM returned. Badulla district, where Ella is, is not listed.
- Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 28 October 2026 said the influence of cyclone Arnab on Sri Lanka's weather has gradually weakened as the storm makes landfall in Andhra Pradesh, India. It expected several spells of showers in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, showers or thundershowers at a few places in Uva Province after 1 pm, and strong winds of about 40 to 50 kmph at times on the western slopes of the Central hills.
- What to do: call 117, the Disaster Management Centre hotline, and check the Department of Meteorology bulletin before you leave and again at your first stop. Our Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide explains the wider pattern.
If a warning applies on your travel day, tell your driver, ask for a daylight arrival, and be ready to change the plan.
What should you ask a driver or conductor?
- Pick-up place. Give the exact place in Colombo, and the name of your Ella hotel.
- Price. Ask for the full price, and what it covers.
- Route. Ask which road the driver will use and why.
- Arrival time. Ask for a daylight arrival, so you do not climb the last part in the dark.
- Bus stop. If you take a bus, ask if it calls at Ella, and where it stops.
