Day trips from Kandy

Five day trips from Kandy compared by road distance and time, entry tickets and the best start time: Peradeniya, Pinnawala, Dambulla, Sigiriya with Dambulla in one day, and Nuwara Eliya. Road times are OpenStreetMap routes with no traffic, checked 1 November 2026.

What are the best day trips from Kandy?

Quick answer: The best day trips from Kandy are Sigiriya and the Dambulla Cave Temple together, Pinnawala for the elephants, and the Peradeniya gardens for a short half day. Sigiriya is about 89 km and 1 hour 48 minutes by road with no traffic, and Pinnawala is about 40 km and 48 minutes. Nuwara Eliya also works, but it is a long day on mountain roads.

Kandy sits in the middle of the island, so it is a good base for the Cultural Triangle to the north, the elephants to the west and the tea country to the south. The trick is to pick one big trip a day and start early, before the heat and the traffic.

Sigiriya is hot by late morning, so if you would rather climb early, swap the order: Sigiriya first, then Dambulla on the way back. The Central Cultural Fund tickets page, as read for our ticket guide on 24 October 2026, gives ticket counter hours of 7.00 am to 5.00 pm, so do not arrive after about 3.30 pm and expect a full visit. Our Kandy to Sigiriya guide covers the bus and taxi options for this road in detail.

How much do the tickets cost?

These are the main tickets for one foreign adult. The Pinnawala price was read from its official page on 1 November 2026. The others come from our ticket prices guide.

Sigiriya plus Dambulla comes to USD 45 in tickets for one foreign adult, before transport and food. That total uses Sri Lanka Tourism's undated USD 10 figure for the Dambulla Cave Temple. On 24 October 2026 the Central Cultural Fund tickets page listed Sigiriya on its round ticket but not the Dambulla Cave Temple, as our ticket guide records.

How do I visit Pinnawala from Kandy?

Pinnawala is the shortest of the big trips, at about 40 km and 48 minutes with no traffic. The orphanage opens at 8.30 am every day, and its ticket counter closes at 5.00 pm. Its official page lists the daily routine:

TimeWhat happens
8.30 amOpens, main herd moves to the free-roaming area
10.00 amMain herd goes to the Ma Oya river to bathe
12.00 pmMain herd comes back
2.00 pmMain herd goes to the river again
4.00 pmMain herd comes back

Leave Kandy by about 8.45 am to see the 10.00 am bath. The page says the orphanage cares for 65 elephants. A combined ticket with Pinnawala Zoo costs USD 23.60 for a foreign adult on the same page. Pinnawala also pairs well with a trip back to Colombo, as our day trips from Colombo guide shows.

Is the Peradeniya garden worth a half day?

Yes, if you want a short, flat outing. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya are only 5.9 km from central Kandy, about 7 minutes with no traffic, so a tuk-tuk is the easy way there. You can do it in a morning and still visit the Temple of the Tooth in the evening.

We could not read a current ticket price for the gardens from an official page on 1 November 2026, so check at the gate. Go early or late in the day, when it is cooler.

Can you do Nuwara Eliya as a day trip?

You can, but we would stay a night if you have time. Nuwara Eliya is 75.1 km and 1 hour 34 minutes from Kandy on the route we ran, but that is the no-traffic figure on a winding mountain road. Expect closer to three hours each way in practice.

Before you leave, check the latest landslide bulletin for Nuwara Eliya district on the Disaster Management Centre site, and do not drive the hill roads after dark in heavy rain. Our Nuwara Eliya guide covers what to see once you are there.

Can you take the train from Kandy?

Do not plan a day trip around the train right now. Sri Lanka Railways suspended all trains between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola from midnight at the end of 25 October 2026 until further notice (Newswire, 25 October 2026). A restart was not confirmed on 1 November 2026. Before you plan any rail day, call Sri Lanka Railways on 1971 or ask at Kandy station. By road, a hired car or tuk-tuk is the most reliable choice for these trips.
