Trincomalee to Arugam Bay: Road, Bus and Where to Stop
Trincomalee to Arugam Bay: an OSRM road ladder via Batticaloa, Kalmunai and Pottuvil, what the July 2026 NTC table does and does not list, east coast weather normals and a dated 29 October 2026 check.

How far is Trincomalee from Arugam Bay by road?
Quick answer: Trincomalee to Arugam Bay is about 248 km and 4 hours 58 minutes by road with no traffic, on an OpenStreetMap sample taken on 29 October 2026. The east coast road runs south through Batticaloa, Kalmunai, Akkaraipattu and Pottuvil. We found no National Transport Commission (NTC) row for Trincomalee to Arugam Bay or to Pottuvil in the July 2026 fare table, so we quote no bus fare and no timetable for this trip. A sensible plan is to break at Batticaloa, which is about 137 km and 2 hours 54 minutes from Trincomalee on our sample, and leave the final 112 km for the next morning.
We sampled routes between town centres on 29 October 2026. The first route is from Trincomalee to Arugam Bay, with the stops we sampled in between.
| Leg in our sample | Distance | OSRM time |
|---|---|---|
| Trincomalee to Batticaloa Fort | 137.4 km | 2 h 54 min |
| Batticaloa Fort to Kalmunai | 41.1 km | 47 min |
| Kalmunai to Akkaraipattu | 23.0 km | 29 min |
| Akkaraipattu to Pottuvil | 46.4 km | 50 min |
| Pottuvil to Arugam Bay | 3.1 km | 4 min |
| Trincomalee to Arugam Bay, direct sample | 247.9 km | 4 h 58 min |
| Arugam Bay to Trincomalee, reverse sample | 248.5 km | 5 h 0 min |
| Batticaloa Fort to Arugam Bay | 112.4 km | 2 h 8 min |
The stops add up to 251.0 km, a little more than the direct sample of 247.9 km, because the map joins some roads without passing through each town centre. These are single samples, not a promise about the path any driver will take. Real trips take longer because of traffic, villages on the road, stops and rain. Our Arugam Bay destination guide and our east coast region guide put the road in context, and our driving guide covers road rules.
Is there a bus from Trincomalee to Arugam Bay?
We could not confirm one from the official table. The NTC inter-provincial fare table effective 6 July 2026 has no Trincomalee to Arugam Bay row and no Trincomalee to Pottuvil row in the rows we read. It lists Arugam Bay's neighbour Pottuvil as an end point on two routes only, from Colombo (98-4) and from Kalpitiya (4/86-10), as our Arugam Bay to Yala guide also notes. It does not name Arugam Bay. Here are the nearest rows that do exist:
| NTC route | From and to | Normal | Semi-luxury | Air-conditioned luxury |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 98-4 | Colombo to Pottuvil | Rs 1,450 | Rs 2,175 | not listed |
| 98 | Colombo to Akkaraipattu | Rs 1,621 | Rs 2,432 | Rs 3,096 |
| 98-3 | Colombo to Kalmunai | Rs 1,653 | Rs 2,480 | Rs 3,160 |
"Not listed" means the table has a dash in that column. These rows do not tell you that a bus runs from Trincomalee down the coast, and the table gives route ends only, with no stops or times. A Trincomalee to Pottuvil journey may mean changing buses at Batticaloa or Kalmunai. We found no source for that, so ask at the Trincomalee bus stand and at Batticaloa before you commit. We quote no fare for any such leg. Our Arugam Bay to Colombo guide explains the Colombo to Pottuvil row in more detail.
Is the east coast road a good day trip, or should you stop?
At about 5 hours with no traffic, it is a long single day. Our map sample has no stops built in, so the real journey is longer. Our advice:
| If this is you | Plan |
|---|---|
| You have a car and driver and an early start | One long day is possible, with lunch at Batticaloa |
| You want to rest and see something on the way | Break at Batticaloa, then 112.4 km and about 2 hours 8 minutes the next morning |
| You rely on buses with no confirmed times | Allow two days and keep a spare, since we found no official timetable |
Our Batticaloa guide covers the halfway town, and our Pasikudah guide covers another east coast beach base. We have not checked opening times or room availability anywhere, so confirm them close to travel.
What will the weather be like along the road?
These are the 1991 to 2020 WMO normals for the three stations along the road, so use them to decide whether and what to pack, not to fix a day.
| Station | Nov rain (mm) | Nov rain days | Dec rain (mm) | Dec rain days | Nov average high | Dec average high |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trincomalee | 375.6 | 17.9 | 339.0 | 15.0 | 29.8 C (86 F) | 28.8 C (84 F) |
| Batticaloa | 418.6 | 17.2 | 468.8 | 16.8 | 29.7 C (85 F) | 28.6 C (83 F) |
| Pottuvil | 307.6 | 14.6 | 306.5 | 13.3 | 30.9 C (88 F) | 29.9 C (86 F) |
Batticaloa is the wettest of the three in both months, with 468.8 mm in December. The whole coast is wet in the late year, which is why many travellers choose the south coast then. Our east coast or south coast guide compares them, and our Trincomalee November weather guide has the Trincomalee end in more detail. Our Arugam Bay to Yala guide cites Sri Lanka Tourism's calendar for April to October as the surf season there.
What is the weather and landslide check for this route? (Checked 29 October 2026)
- Landslide warning: the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) landslide early warning LEWM-28-10-2026-1600-35, published by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), is valid from 4 pm on 28 October to 4 pm on 29 October 2026 and lists no area at Level 3 (Red). It does not list Trincomalee, Batticaloa or Ampara districts.
- Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 29 October 2026 expected showers or thundershowers at a few places after 1.00 pm in Batticaloa and Ampara districts, and mainly fair weather in most other areas.
- Sea: the sea area forecast issued at 5.30 am on 29 October 2026 says cyclonic storm Arnab, over the north coast of Andhra Pradesh in India, has weakened into a deep depression, and the warning for multi-day boats in the deep south-west Bay of Bengal is withdrawn. It expects winds of 25 to 35 kmph, up to 45 kmph at times, and seas that are fairly rough at times from Puttalam to Mullaitivu via Kankesanthurai and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, with gusts of 60 to 70 kmph and very rough seas possible in thundershowers. Arugam Bay and Pottuvil sit at the end of the Galle to Pottuvil stretch, so check the sea forecast before any surf or boat plan.
- What to do: call 117, the DMC hotline, and check the Met bulletin before you leave and again at your first stop. Our monsoon seasons guide explains the wider pattern.
If a warning applies on your travel day, ask for a daylight arrival and be ready to change the plan.
What should you ask before you travel?
- Is there a bus that runs the whole way, and where does it leave from? The NTC table shows none.
- Where would I change buses, and how long is the wait? Ask at Batticaloa or Kalmunai.
- How long does a car and driver take with stops? Our sample is a floor.
- What is the plan if rain or a warning changes the road? Keep one spare day.
