Our Nilaveli guide has the full twelve-month table for the same station. This page is the November zoom, with the neighbouring east coast stations and today's warnings.
How does November compare with October and December?
| Month | Rain (mm) | Rain days (1 mm or more) | Days of 10 mm or more | Average high | Average low |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct | 215.6 | 12.8 | 6.1 | 32.4 C (90 F) | 24.5 C (76 F) |
| Nov | 375.6 | 17.9 | 10.5 | 29.8 C (86 F) | 24.0 C (75 F) |
| Dec | 339.0 | 15.0 | 8.2 | 28.8 C (84 F) | 23.8 C (75 F) |
| Jan | 152.4 | 8.4 | 4.1 | 28.9 C (84 F) | 24.0 C (75 F) |
| Feb | 96.1 | 4.7 | 3.0 | 30.1 C (86 F) | 24.3 C (76 F) |
- November is the peak. It has about 1.7 times the rain of October and 2.5 times the rain of January.
- December is nearly as wet (339.0 mm), and January (152.4 mm) is the first clear easing.
- Heat falls through the period. Days at 30 C or higher drop from 27.2 in October to 15.0 in November and 6.1 in December.
Is the east coast wetter than the rest of the island in November?
Not by much in this month, and that surprises many people. The second inter-monsoon brings thunderstorms across the island, so November is wet on most coasts.
| November normals | Trincomalee | Batticaloa | Pottuvil | Colombo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rain (mm) | 375.6 | 418.6 | 307.6 | 345.8 |
| Rain days (1 mm or more) | 17.9 | 17.2 | 14.6 | 16.0 |
| Average high | 29.8 C (86 F) | 29.7 C (85 F) | 30.9 C (88 F) | 30.6 C (87 F) |
Batticaloa is wetter than Trincomalee, with 418.6 mm. Colombo, on the west coast, has 345.8 mm in November. The big split comes in December and after, when the south and west dry out and the east stays wet. Colombo falls to 170.7 mm in December while Trincomalee has 339.0 mm. For the coast-by-coast choice, read our east coast or south coast guide, our monsoon seasons guide and our east coast region guide.
What does the 2026 outlook say?
The Department of Meteorology's consensus outlook, issued 2 October 2026, expects above-normal rain across most of the country for the October to December season and for November. For December it gives "a higher probability of slightly above-normal rainfall across most parts of the country, while near-normal rainfall is expected in the Northern Province." It links the pattern to a continuing El Nino and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole likely to develop.
Trincomalee district is in the Eastern Province, so the outlook leans toward wetter than the normals above, with no amount attached.
What is the weather warning today? (Checked 29 October 2026)
This block is a dated snapshot, not a November forecast.
- Rain. The Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 29 October 2026 expected showers or thundershowers at a few places after 1.00 pm in Batticaloa and Ampara districts, and mainly fair weather in most other areas. It did not name Trincomalee district.
- Sea. The sea area forecast issued at 5.30 am on 29 October 2026 says cyclonic storm Arnab, over the north coast of Andhra Pradesh in India, has weakened into a deep depression, and the warning for multi-day boats in the deep south-west Bay of Bengal is withdrawn. It expects winds of 25 to 35 kmph, up to 45 kmph at times, and seas that are fairly rough at times from Puttalam to Mullaitivu via Kankesanthurai and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, with gusts of 60 to 70 kmph and very rough seas possible in thundershowers. Trincomalee is not named in either stretch, but the forecast is for the whole sea around the island, so ask your boat operator on the day.
- Landslides. The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) landslide early warning LEWM-28-10-2026-1600-35, published by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), is valid from 4 pm on 28 October to 4 pm on 29 October 2026 and lists no area at Level 3 (Red). It does not list Trincomalee district. Landslides are mainly a hill concern.
- What to do. Call 117, the DMC hotline, and read the Met bulletin. We cannot confirm road, sea or boat status.
What about whale watching and Pigeon Island in November?
The Sri Lanka Navy's whale watching site, read on 29 October 2026, says its cruises are scheduled from Galle and Trincomalee in "November to April and May to October respectively". So the Navy's Trincomalee cruises are listed for May to October, and November falls outside that window. Our whale watching guide covers the operators, and no sighting is guaranteed in any month. We cannot say whether private operators run in November, so ask directly.
Pigeon Island National Park is a protected marine park. Our place page says permits, authorised boats and sea conditions decide whether a snorkel trip is possible, so check all three close to the day. With rough-sea warnings on the DMC list, do not book a boat on a seasonal label alone.
What can you do in Trincomalee when it rains?
Our guides already carry the sightseeing detail, so here is the planning logic.
- Use the dry hours. The normals carry no hourly data, so we cannot say mornings are drier. Keep the plan flexible and check the forecast.
- Pick a short stop you can fit between showers. Koneswaram Temple is a sacred site, so follow our sacred sites guide on dress and conduct. We have not checked opening hours, so confirm locally.
- Skip the beach plan if the sea is rough. See our Trincomalee destination guide and our Nilaveli guide for the beach areas.
- Allow extra time on the road. If you are coming from the south, our Trincomalee to Arugam Bay road guide has distances for the east coast road.
What should you pack for Trincomalee in November?
- A light rain jacket and a dry bag for phones and documents.
- Light, quick-dry clothes, since highs stay near 30 C.
- Sun protection for the dry hours.
- Sandals with grip, plus covered shoes for temples.
- A wind layer if you will be on a boat.
Who should go in November, and who should wait?
Go in November if your dates are fixed, you can keep a spare day and you are happy with warm, wet weather and sightseeing at a slower pace.
Wait for another month if a beach week is the point. On the normals, the dry months for Trincomalee are February to September, and our Nilaveli guide says every month from February to September averages under 115 mm there. For the wetter east coast side of December, see our Sri Lanka in December guide.
