What is a good 10-day Sri Lanka itinerary with kids?
Quick answer: Do one loop with two-night stays: Negombo, Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, the train to Ella, then Udawalawe and the Mirissa beaches. No drive is longer than about 3 hours, so children get pool and beach time most days. Go in January to March, when this route is at its driest. Under-12s get a free ETA.
This route is for families who want a mix of history, animals, a train ride and beaches without moving every night. If you are still deciding whether Sri Lanka suits your family, our Sri Lanka with kids guide covers the planning questions first.
What does the day-by-day plan look like?
| Day | Base | What you do | Drive (no traffic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Negombo | Land and rest | Airport to Negombo, 11 km, about 15 min |
| 2 | Sigiriya | Transfer, pool | 148 km, about 2 h 50 min |
| 3 | Sigiriya | Climb Sigiriya at 7 am | None |
| 4 | Kandy | Dambulla cave temple on the way | Sigiriya to Dambulla 17 km, then Dambulla to Kandy 73 km |
| 5 | Kandy | Temple of the Tooth, Kandy Lake | Short tuk-tuk rides |
| 6 | Nuwara Eliya | Cool hill evening | Kandy to Nanu Oya 79 km, about 1 h 40 min |
| 7 | Ella | Train from Nanu Oya, Nine Arch Bridge | Train, about 2 h 27 min |
| 8 | Ella | Little Adam's Peak early | None |
| 9 | Mirissa | Udawalawe stop on the way | Ella to Udawalawe 100 km, then 102 km to Mirissa |
| 10 | Mirissa or fly home | Beach, or a whale cruise in season | Mirissa to the airport, 175 km, about 2 h 20 min |
Real drives are slower than these OpenStreetMap figures, especially in the hills and through towns. Plan on breaks every 1 to 1.5 hours for young children.
Why does this route work for children?
- Two nights at almost every stop. Children settle better, and you unpack less.
- Early starts, slow afternoons. Sigiriya and Little Adam's Peak are best before the heat. Afternoons are for the pool or the beach.
- A train ride without the long day. The full rail trip from Kandy is not running right now, and the Nanu Oya to Ella section is about 2.5 hours, a good length for kids.
- Animals. Udawalawe sits on the road from Ella to the south coast. See our Udawalawe National Park guide for safari details.
- Beach at the end. Ending on the coast means a relaxed last day before a long flight.

How do you book the Ella train with children?
Book seats on the official Sri Lanka Railways reservation site as soon as your date opens, 30 days ahead. The FAQ says you need a NIC or passport number for every passenger, you can book up to 5 seats at once, and you cannot choose seat numbers (SLR reservation FAQ).
| Train | Runs | Leaves Nanu Oya | Reaches Ella |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1005 | Daily | 9.00 am | 11.27 am |
| 1043 Ella Odyssey | Wednesdays only | 1.00 pm | 3.21 pm |
| 1015 | Not Wednesdays | 2.30 pm | 4.57 pm |
Times are from the railway's notice in force from 20 June 2026 (SLR notice, PDF). The morning 1005 suits families best: you arrive in Ella for lunch. See our Nanu Oya to Nuwara Eliya guide for the short road transfer to the station, and the train booking guide for step-by-step help.
When is the best time for this route?
January to March, especially February. These are the WMO 1991 to 2020 February normals for weather stations near each stop (WMO normals):
| Stop | Station | February rain | February high | June rain, for comparison |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Negombo | Katunayake | 56.4 mm | 32.7 C (91 F) | 157.9 mm |
| Sigiriya, Dambulla | Maha Illuppallama | 82.4 mm | 31.4 C (89 F) | 21.7 mm |
| Kandy | Katugastota | 78.1 mm | 30.2 C (86 F) | 124.5 mm |
| Nuwara Eliya | Nuwara Eliya | 72.7 mm | 21.0 C (70 F) | 168.3 mm |
| Ella | Badulla | 102.3 mm | 27.2 C (81 F) | 51.6 mm |
| Mirissa | Galle | 71.1 mm | 30.7 C (87 F) | 184.0 mm |
February is reasonably dry everywhere on the loop. In June the south coast and Nuwara Eliya are wet, so a summer family trip works better on the east coast; see our Sri Lanka in June guide. The Navy's south coast whale cruise also only runs from November to April.
Avoid October and November for this route. They are among the wettest months in the hills. On 18 October 2026 the NBRI's landslide warning listed divisions in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla and Kegalle districts (NBRI warning).
What health and safety basics should families know?
- Water. The US State Department says tap water is not safe to drink. Use sealed bottled or boiled water.
- Emergency numbers. The State Department lists 119 for police, 1990 for ambulance and 1912 for the tourist police.
- Sun and heat. Highs above 30 C (86 F) are normal on the coast and in the Cultural Triangle. Plan shade and water breaks.
- Car seats. Ask your driver or car company in advance if you need child seats, and bring your own if you are unsure.
- Sea safety. Swim only where hotels or locals say it is safe, and watch for red flags.
Our Is Sri Lanka safe guide covers road safety and monsoon risks in more detail.
How can you shorten or change the route?
| If you have | Do this |
|---|---|
| 7 days | Drop Nuwara Eliya and Ella. Go Negombo, Sigiriya, Kandy, then the south coast |
| Toddlers | Skip the Sigiriya climb and the 5-hour whale cruise. Add a second beach night |
| Teens | Add rafting at Kitulgala, which the provincial tourism site says is for ages above 10 |
| 14 days | Add the east coast in summer, or Galle Fort on the south coast. See two weeks at a standard pace |
For a shorter first trip without children, our 5-day Sri Lanka itinerary covers the essentials.
