Sri Lanka in June
June is the driest month of the year in much of Sri Lanka's east, north and Cultural Triangle, while Colombo, Galle and Nuwara Eliya stay wet. Weather for 16 stations in C and F, Poson 2027, Trincomalee whale cruises and a simple June route, checked 19 October 2026.

Is June a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
Quick answer: Yes, if you go east or north. June is one of the driest months of the year on the east coast, in Jaffna and in the ancient cities, while Colombo, Galle and the western hills are wet. June 2027 also has Poson on Friday 18 June, a big pilgrimage day at Anuradhapura and Mihintale. Skip the south coast beaches this month.
What is the weather like in Sri Lanka in June?

Sri Lanka Tourism's beach page explains the pattern: "The South West winds make the East Coast waters quiet with the constant sun shine" (Sri Lanka Tourism, beaches).

When is Poson in 2027, and what happens?
Poson Full Moon Poya Day is Friday 18 June 2027. It is a public and bank holiday in the government's 2027 holiday gazette (Gazette No. 2493/05). The next poya, Esala, falls on Sunday 18 July 2027.
| Date (2027) | Day | Holiday |
|---|---|---|
| 18 June | Friday | Poson Full Moon Poya Day |
| 18 July | Sunday | Esala Full Moon Poya Day |
Poson remembers the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, which tradition places at Mihintale near Anuradhapura. With Poson on a Friday, the weekend of 18 to 20 June 2027 will be busy around Anuradhapura and Mihintale. Book rooms early, expect crowds near the sacred sites, and dress modestly. Our festival calendar lists all poya days, and the sacred sites guide covers temple etiquette.
Can you see whales in Sri Lanka in June?
Yes, from Trincomalee. The Sri Lanka Navy lists whale cruises from Trincomalee from May to October, every Saturday and Sunday at 7.00 am from the Nicholson Cove pier at the Naval Dockyard, lasting 5 hours (Sri Lanka Navy schedules).
| Navy cruise from Trincomalee | Ticket | Tax | Total |

The Central Cultural Fund's ticket page, updated 14 October 2026, lists full tickets of US$35 for Sigiriya and US$30 each for Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, with sites open 7 am to 5 pm (CCF tickets).
