Is 2 weeks enough for Sri Lanka?

Yes. Two weeks is enough for one full loop at a steady pace: the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hill country, one safari and the south coast. This plan uses 8 bases over 14 days and lists a dated cost for every ticket and fare we could check. The fixed costs come to LKR 29,239 (about £68 or US$90); rooms, food, a driver and the safari are on top.

Prices are the ones we could check on official or business pages; "quote" means there is no published price, so ask before you agree. Currency is converted at the CBSL buying rate for 16 October 2026 (£1 = LKR 432.60, US$1 = LKR 326.67).

How should you spend days 1 to 4 in the Cultural Triangle?

Day 1. After a long flight, sleep near the airport. Negombo is the usual choice; Bentota is about 61 km south of Colombo Fort by rail if you would rather start on a quieter beach and then drive inland.

Day 2. Drive to the Dambulla and Sigiriya area and visit the Dambulla cave temple in the late afternoon. The temple's counter listed LKR 3,000, with children under 12 free. Cover shoulders and knees, and take off shoes and hats. The Dambulla guide helps you choose a base near the caves.

Day 3. Climb Sigiriya at opening time to beat the heat and the queues. The CCF listed the full ticket at LKR 11,760 (US$35) on 14 October 2026.

Day 4. Drive to Polonnaruwa for the day. The full ticket was LKR 10,080 (US$30). Rent a bicycle or keep the car, because the site is spread out. If you are tired of ruins, swap this day for a rest day or for Minneriya.

How should you spend days 5 to 8 in Kandy and Ella?

Days 5 and 6. Drive to Kandy. Visit the Temple of the Tooth: foreign tickets were LKR 3,000 (LKR 2,500 for SAARC nationals) on the temple's FAQ. Buy only from the temple's machines. Spend day 6 slowly around the lake and the market.

Day 7. The train does not run from Kandy station as of 14 October 2026, because the Peradeniya railway bridge is being restored (Kandy to Ella train guide). Drive to Nanu Oya instead and take the Nanu Oya to Ella train, the most scenic part of the line. If you prefer to stay on the road the whole way, read Kandy to Ella by road.

Day 8. Walk up Little Adam's Peak early, then see the Nine Arch Bridge. Badulla, the weather station for Ella, has more rain days than the coast, so mornings are usually best.

Should you do the Yala safari on days 9 and 10?

Only if a safari matters to you. Drive from Ella to the Tissamaharama area on day 9, then do a morning safari on day 10. Yala Blocks 1 and 2 were scheduled to reopen on 16 October 2026 after a drought closure; see the Yala National Park page for the latest. Buy the permit through the Department of Wildlife Conservation's ePermit portal, which prices it by park, group and vehicle. A jeep is a separate quote from the operator.

How should you spend days 11 to 14 on the south coast?

Day 11. Drive west along the coast to Galle. Walk the Galle Fort walls at sunset and stay inside the fort.

Days 12 and 13. Move to Mirissa for a beach and, from November to April, a whale trip. In October 2026 the Navy said its cruises were paused for ship maintenance, so check before you book. Surfers can stay in Ahangama instead, between Galle and Mirissa, where group lessons started at LKR 5,000 on 17 October 2026. The south coast region guide compares the beach towns.

Day 14. Drive back to the airport on the expressways. Leave plenty of time, as there is no rail link to the airport terminal.

When is the best time for this route?

December to March. Sri Lanka Tourism calls December to February the peak season on the south-west coast (Sri Lanka Tourism weather page), and the Cultural Triangle is also fairly dry in January. How can you make the route slower?

• Drop Polonnaruwa or Yala, not both Kandy nights.
• Stay in one Dambulla or Sigiriya base for days 2 to 4.
• Pick Galle or Mirissa as your one beach base.
• Use any spare night as a buffer for rain or a late train.

What should you book first?

1. Flights, and your ETA on the official site (visa guide).
2. A car and driver for days 2 to 11, with fuel arrangements agreed (see is Sri Lanka safe for the fuel quota).
3. The Nanu Oya to Ella train seat as soon as booking opens.
4. Rooms for days 12 and 13 if you travel in December or January.
5. The Yala permit and jeep, once the park status is clear.
