Karainagar

The island west of Jaffna with Casuarina beach, the Eelathu Chithambaram Sivan temple and Fort Hammenhiel just offshore. Road times from Jaffna and the airport, Jaffna station normals and a dated weather check.

Is Casuarina beach in Karainagar worth the trip?

Quick answer: Yes, if you want a beach day from Jaffna. Casuarina beach is on Karainagar island, about 21 km and 29 minutes from central Jaffna by road with no traffic, and the tourism bureau calls it the best beach in the region. The same island has the Eelathu Chithambaram Sivan temple, and Fort Hammenhiel sits on a sand bank in the channel between Karainagar and Kayts. Go between January and September if you can, because October to December are the wet months.

Karainagar is one of the islands off the west side of the Jaffna peninsula. OpenStreetMap routes it by road from Jaffna, so you do not need a boat to reach the beach or the temple. Most people base themselves in Jaffna and come for half a day.

What is there to see in Karainagar?

The Northern Province tourism bureau lists these sights on or next to the island. We did not visit them today.

What is Casuarina beach like?

The bureau describes a wide beach with shallow water and gentle waves, where you can walk a long way into the sea. It says the beach probably got its name from the dense casuarina trees along it, and that it draws both local and foreign holidaymakers. It calls it the best beach in the Jaffna region. The bureau page carries a date of 5 December 2019, so treat the details as background, not a recent report.

The page gives no lifeguard, toilet, parking or food details. Bring water and shade, and expect weekends and holidays to be busier than weekdays.

Swimming. Shallow water is not the same as safe water. Swim only where local people are swimming, stay inside your depth and leave the sea when the wind picks up. On 29 October 2026 the Met sea forecast expected fairly rough seas at times along this stretch of coast (see the weather check below).

What is the Eelathu Chithambaram temple?

The bureau calls the Karainagar Sivan temple Eelathu Chithambaram and says it is dedicated to Lord Nadarajar in the manner of Thillai Chithambaram in south India. It says the chief deities are Lord Sunthareswarar and his consort Savuntharambikai.

Details from the bureau page:

  • Two granite towers, or Raja Gopurams, stand at the entrance.
  • The temple chariot is 39 feet high, with carved figures of 108 Siva thandavam, 63 Saiva saints and 25 forms of Maheswara in five rising tiers. Its first dry run was on 10 January 2006.
  • Three high festivals are held each year. The bureau names Thiruvathirai, with the procession of five chariots, as the largest. It also names special festivals on Aadi Pooram for Goddess Savuntharambikai and on Panguni Uththaram for Lord Somaskandar.

Festival dates follow the Hindu calendar and move each year, so check them before you go. Dress modestly, as for any Hindu temple. Our Nallur temple guide explains the dress code at Jaffna's best-known temple.

What is the history of Fort Hammenhiel?

The bureau says the Portuguese built the fort and named it Fortaleza do Caes. It is a small round fort of solid coral stone with two internal levels, and walls about four and a half metres high. It stands on a sand bank between Karainagar and Kayts, on the only navigation channel from the sea to the lagoon on which Jaffna stands.

The bureau's account of its history:

  • The Dutch took it during the siege of Jaffna in 1658, after a fortnight of bombardment from the shore smashed its wooden rainwater tank.
  • The Dutch saw Hammenhiel as the key to Jaffna and ruled that its garrison of 30 should all be Dutch.
  • They built a large reservoir, paved with bricks from the Netherlands.
  • The fort was surrendered to the British without resistance in 1795.

The bureau gives no visiting details. Because the fort is out in the channel, you would need a boat to reach it. We could not confirm access or opening today, so ask locally before you plan a visit. For more on the Dutch and Portuguese past of the area, see our Jaffna Fort guide.

How do you get to Karainagar?

The tourism bureau gives 27 km from Jaffna town to Casuarina beach. The gap with our 21.1 km sample may come from a different start point or road, so allow 30 to 45 minutes.

Buses. The National Transport Commission (NTC) inter-provincial fare table covers buses between provinces, not local Jaffna routes. We quote no fare. Ask at the Jaffna bus stand on the day, or hire a three-wheeler or car for a half-day loop.

What is the weather like in Karainagar?

The Department of Meteorology's seasonal outlook issued on 2 October 2026 expects near-normal rainfall in the Northern Province during December 2026.

How can you fit Karainagar into a route?

Karainagar makes an easy half day from Jaffna. One plan is the Sivan temple in the morning, Casuarina beach before the midday heat and a look across the water towards Fort Hammenhiel on the way back. Pair it with Point Pedro on another day to see both ends of the peninsula.

For a longer stay in the north, our Jaffna and the north 7-day itinerary shows how the islands fit around Jaffna town. For more beaches across the island, see our best beaches in Sri Lanka guide.
