How much is the bus from Colombo to Trincomalee?

Quick answer: The National Transport Commission (NTC) fare table in force from 6 July 2026 lists route 49, Colombo to Trincomalee, at Rs 1,125 on a normal bus, Rs 1,688 semi-luxury and Rs 2,147 air-conditioned luxury. By road it is about 259.5 km and 4 hours 43 minutes with no traffic on an OpenStreetMap sample, and the route uses the Central Expressway for about 40 km. The table gives route ends only, so it shows no stops, no departure times and no travel time. Breaking the trip does not save money on normal buses: Colombo to Kurunegala plus Kurunegala to Trincomalee adds up to Rs 1,137 against Rs 1,125 direct.

NTC routeFrom and toNormalSemi-luxuryAir-conditioned luxury
49Colombo to TrincomaleeRs 1,125Rs 1,688Rs 2,147

The three fare columns follow the table's own headings. These are full fares for the end to end route. The table does not say where route 49 leaves Colombo or where it stops in Trincomalee, and it does not publish a timetable, so ask at the bus stand before you travel. We also cannot say how long the bus takes. Our road sample is for a car with no traffic, and a bus that stops in towns will be slower.

Which other NTC routes end in Trincomalee?

If you are not starting in Colombo, Trincomalee end routes in the same table include these. We have not checked that this is every one. Each row is a route end to end, not a stop by stop fare.

"Not listed" means the table has a dash in that column. It does not tell you whether such a bus exists on that route.

Is it cheaper to break the journey?

Not on the numbers we could read. We checked the rows that start in Colombo and then connect.

PlanFare, normal busOur arithmetic
Route 49, directRs 1,125Table fare
Route 5 or 6, Colombo to Kurunegala, then route 49-1 to TrincomaleeRs 413 + Rs 724 = Rs 1,137Rs 12 more than direct
Route 5 or 6, Colombo to Kurunegala, then route 549 to DambullaRs 413 + Rs 276 = Rs 689Gets you to Dambulla, with no Dambulla to Trincomalee row found

The sums are our own. Routes 5 and 6 both list Colombo to Kurunegala at Rs 413 on a normal bus, and route 6 also lists Rs 812 on the air-conditioned luxury fare. The NTC expressway table of the same date lists Colombo to Kurunegala (routes EX03 and EX04) at Rs 930 in a single column headed as a luxury service fare. Breaking the trip is about rest and sightseeing, not savings. We found no row for Dambulla to Trincomalee, so we cannot price that leg.

What is the road route and how long does it take?

We sampled routes on 29 October 2026 from Colombo Fort to the middle of Trincomalee. OpenStreetMap routing gave 259.5 km and about 4 hours 43 minutes with no traffic. It uses the A1 and AB29 to join the Central Expressway (E04) for about 40 km, then the A6 north. Because it uses the expressway, the figure is for a car or taxi on the expressway, not a bus on the old road.

These are one sample each, not a promise about the road any driver will take. Real trips take longer because of traffic, towns on the A6, stops and rain. The Dambulla to Trincomalee leg and the Colombo to Dambulla leg add up to 259.7 km, which is close to the full sample.

If you plan to hire a car from the airport, our Colombo airport to Trincomalee guide has the airport taxi card line and an airport sample.

Where can you break the trip?

The A6 passes through the Cultural Triangle, so three towns are natural stops. Our guides carry the sightseeing detail.

  • Dambulla is a natural break, a little past halfway on our sample, 151.5 km and about 2 hours 38 minutes from Colombo Fort. It has the Dambulla Cave Temple.
  • Habarana is on the same road, and our Trincomalee page puts it about 84 km from Trincomalee by road.
  • Anuradhapura is a bigger detour. Our sample puts it 107.0 km and about 1 hour 59 minutes from Trincomalee.

Our Cultural Triangle guide shows how the sites connect. We have not checked opening times for any site, so confirm them close to travel.

What is the weather and landslide check for this route? (Checked 29 October 2026)

  • Landslide warning: the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) landslide early warning LEWM-28-10-2026-1600-35, published by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), is valid from 4 pm on 28 October to 4 pm on 29 October 2026 and lists no area at Level 3 (Red). It puts Level 2 (Amber) on Attanagalla in Gampaha district and Level 1 (Yellow) on the Kurunegala division in Kurunegala district. Our road sample uses the A6 through Kurunegala district, going by the road names OSRM returned. It does not list Matale, Anuradhapura or Trincomalee districts.
  • Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 29 October 2026 expected several spells of showers in the Western Province and mainly fair weather in most other areas, which includes North-central province and Trincomalee district on this route. The same forecast expected showers or thundershowers at a few places in Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 1 pm.
  • What to do: call 117, the DMC hotline, and check the Met bulletin before you leave and again at your first stop. Our Trincomalee November weather guide shows what rain is normal at the destination, and our monsoon seasons guide explains the wider pattern.

If a warning applies on your travel day, ask for a daylight arrival and be ready to change the plan. Our Trincomalee destination guide covers the stay.

What should you ask before you travel?

  • Where does the bus leave from? The NTC table gives route ends only.
  • Is it the normal, semi-luxury or air-conditioned service? Fares differ by column.
  • Does it use the expressway? Our road sample does, and a bus may not.
  • How long will it take? No official time was found, so ask the conductor.
  • What is the plan if rain or a warning changes the road? Keep one spare day.
