- Day 2
Sigiriya
Climb Sigiriya at 7 am, rest at midday, then drive about 53 km to Polonnaruwa for the afternoon.

What can you do in Sri Lanka in 3 days?
Quick answer: Pick one region. The best 3-day plan for a first visit is the Cultural Triangle: the Dambulla cave temple on day 1, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa on day 2, and the drive back to the airport on day 3. That is about 396 km of driving in total. If you would rather have the sea, spend the 3 days on the south coast instead.
Three days is short, so this plan keeps the driving to the first and last day and puts the big sights in the middle. For more time, see our 5-day itinerary, which adds Kandy, or how many days you need.
What does the 3-day plan look like?
| Day | Route | Distance and time (OSRM) | What to see |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Airport to Dambulla, then Sigiriya | 128 km, 2 h 15 min; then 17 km, 23 min | Dambulla cave temple if you arrive before 5 pm |
| 2 | Sigiriya to Polonnaruwa and back | 53 km, 1 h 2 min each way | Sigiriya rock at 7 am; Polonnaruwa in the afternoon |
| 3 | Sigiriya to the airport | 145 km, 2 h 37 min | Leave a wide margin before your flight |
| Total | About 396 km |
Day 1. Land, sort out cash and a SIM, and drive north. Our Colombo airport to Sigiriya guide compares car, bus and train. If you land early enough, stop at the Dambulla cave temple on the way. The CCF ticket page lists the cave temple as open from 7 am to 5 pm.
Day 2. Be at the Sigiriya counter at 7 am, before the heat. Rest at midday, then drive to Polonnaruwa, about an hour away, for the afternoon. Polonnaruwa's counters also close at 5 pm, so leave Sigiriya by about 1 pm.
Day 3. Drive back to the airport. If your flight is late in the day, you could fit in a short morning visit near Sigiriya first.
How much do the sights cost?
From the CCF price table, last updated 14 October 2026 at 336 rupees to the dollar:
| Site | Full ticket | Half ticket |
|---|---|---|
| Sigiriya | USD 35 (LKR 11,760) | USD 20 (LKR 6,720) |
| Polonnaruwa | USD 30 (LKR 10,080) | USD 15 (LKR 5,040) |
| Dambulla Museum | USD 3 (LKR 1,008) | USD 1.50 (LKR 504) |
| Sigiriya plus Polonnaruwa | USD 65 (LKR 21,840) |
The CCF ticket page says prices are quoted in USD but paid in rupees, and SAARC citizens get 50% off. It also sells a Cultural Triangle round ticket covering Sigiriya, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, valid for 2 months from first use. The Dambulla cave temple itself is not on the CCF price table. See our Dambulla cave temple page for its ticket.
When is the best time for this route?
These are WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for Maha Illuppallama, the nearest Cultural Triangle station with normals:
| Month | Rain (mm) | Rain days | Average high (°C) |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 92.0 | 7.0 | 29.7 |
| February | 82.4 | 4.4 | 31.4 |
| March | 63.2 | 5.6 | 33.9 |
| April | 179.0 | 11.0 | 34.0 |
| June | 21.7 | 3.0 | 32.3 |
| July | 21.1 | 3.0 | 32.7 |
| August | 39.5 | 3.8 | 33.0 |
| September | 89.8 | 5.3 | 33.1 |
| October | 270.0 | 13.8 | 31.9 |
| November | 273.9 | 16.5 | 30.4 |
| December | 208.8 | 12.5 | 29.3 |
June to September is driest. In October and November, climb early and expect afternoon rain. March and April are the hottest months, so start Sigiriya at 7 am.
Can you do this 3-day trip by bus?
Partly. The airport to Sigiriya leg works by bus: the National Transport Commission lists route 5/245 Katunayake to Kurunegala at Rs 331 and route 549/499 Kurunegala to Sigiriya at Rs 353, about Rs 684 in total on fares from 6 July 2026. The same fare list does not show a Sigiriya to Polonnaruwa route, so for day 2 most people hire a tuk-tuk or car for the afternoon.
| Leg | By bus | By car (OSRM, no traffic) |
|---|---|---|
| Airport to Sigiriya | Two buses, Rs 684 in NTC fares | 145 km, 2 h 37 min |
| Sigiriya to Polonnaruwa | No route in the NTC list | 53 km, 1 h 2 min |
| Sigiriya to the airport | Two buses, Rs 684 in NTC fares | 145 km, 2 h 37 min |
With only 3 days, two long bus days cost you much of your sightseeing time. A car and driver is the practical choice for this plan.
What is a good 3-day beach version?
From November to April the south-west coast is the better beach choice. Our Colombo, Galle and Mirissa weekend is built for 2 to 3 days. Galle Fort is about 151 km from the airport, around 2 hours with no traffic, and Mirissa about 175 km. For the train down the coast, see our Colombo to Galle train guide.
What if you have more time?
| Extra days | Add |
|---|---|
| 2 more (5 days) | Kandy, about 89 km from Sigiriya. See our 5-day itinerary |
| 4 more (7 days) | Anuradhapura or the hill country. See one week, first visit |
| 9 more (12 days) | Hills and beach too. See our 12-day first-timers itinerary |
What should you book before you go?
- Your ETA. Apply before you fly; see our Sri Lanka visa guide.
- A driver for all 3 days. With only 3 days, a car and driver saves the most time.
- Two nights near Sigiriya. Staying 2 nights in one place means no packing on day 2.
Frequently asked questions
Is 3 days enough for Sri Lanka?
It is enough for one region, not the whole island. In 3 days you can see Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa in the Cultural Triangle, or spend a short break on the south coast. Trying to add Kandy, Ella and the beach in 3 days means most of your time is spent in a car.
What is the total driving on this 3-day plan?
About 396 km on OpenStreetMap routes checked 23 October 2026: 128 km from the airport to Dambulla, 17 km to Sigiriya, 53 km each way to Polonnaruwa and 145 km back to the airport.
How much are the entry tickets?
The Central Cultural Fund's price table, last updated 14 October 2026, lists Sigiriya at USD 35 (LKR 11,760) and Polonnaruwa at USD 30 (LKR 10,080) for a full ticket, so USD 65 for both. SAARC citizens get 50% off. The Dambulla cave temple is not on that table.
Can I do Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa in one day?
Yes, if you start early. Climb Sigiriya when the counters open at 7 am, then drive about 53 km (about 1 hour 2 minutes) to Polonnaruwa. Counters at both close at 5 pm, per the Central Cultural Fund.
What is the best 3-day itinerary near the beach instead?
Use the south coast. Our Colombo, Galle and Mirissa weekend plan covers Galle Fort and the beaches. Galle Fort is about 151 km from the airport, around 2 hours by road with no traffic.
When is the best time for a 3-day Cultural Triangle trip?
June to September is driest. The WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for Maha Illuppallama, the nearest Cultural Triangle station, show 21 to 90 mm of rain a month then, against 270 mm in October and 274 mm in November.
Should I stay in Sigiriya or Dambulla for 3 days?
Either works, as they are 17 km apart. This plan uses Sigiriya so you can be at the rock when it opens at 7 am. Our Sigiriya vs Dambulla guide compares the two.
Can I add Kandy to a 3-day trip?
Only by cutting something. Kandy is about 89 km from Sigiriya and about 112 km from the airport by road. If you want Kandy, use our 5-day itinerary, which adds it with two nights.
