Ella to Yala: Road Route and Travel Time
Ella to Yala's Palatupana side: an OSRM road ladder via Wellawaya and Tissamaharama, Kataragama options, what the NTC table does not list and a dated 29 October 2026 weather check. No park status claims.

How far is Ella from Yala by road?
Quick answer: Ella to Palatupana, the usual approach to Yala's southern side, is about 105 km and 2 hours 6 minutes by road with no traffic, on an OpenStreetMap sample re-run on 29 October 2026, via Wellawaya and Tissamaharama. Tissamaharama, the usual base, is 89.3 km and about 1 hour 41 minutes from Ella. We found no National Transport Commission (NTC) bus row for Ella to Yala, so we quote no fare. We make no claim about park gates or blocks, so confirm opening with the Department of Wildlife Conservation first.
Yala National Park is large and has several entrances, so "Ella to Yala" needs a target point. We routed to Palatupana, the village on the southern side that our other guides use, and to Tissamaharama, the usual base. Palatupana is not an entry gate, and we make no claim about gates.
| Leg in our sample | Distance | OSRM time |
|---|---|---|
| Ella to Wellawaya | 27.3 km | 34 min |
| Wellawaya to Tissamaharama | 62.1 km | 1 h 7 min |
| Ella to Tissamaharama, direct sample | 89.3 km | 1 h 41 min |
| Tissamaharama to Palatupana | 15.9 km | 25 min |
| Ella to Palatupana, direct sample | 105.2 km | 2 h 6 min |
| Ella to Hambantota | 107.9 km | 2 h 1 min |
On the Ella to Tissamaharama sample the map used the A23 for about 27 km, the A2 for about 55 km and the B464 for about 5 km. These are single samples, not a promise about the path any driver will take. Real trips take longer because of traffic, villages on the road, stops and rain. A car and driver would also need time to wait for your safari, so do not read these as a day plan. Our Tissamaharama guide is the usual base, and our driving guide covers road rules.
Can you do Ella to Yala and back in one day?
On the road alone, the return trip from Ella to Palatupana and back is about 210 km and 4 hours 12 minutes with no traffic, by our arithmetic of 2 hours 6 minutes each way. That leaves no room for the safari itself, meals or delays. Our Arugam Bay to Yala guide makes the same point for the east coast side.
| If this is you | Plan |
|---|---|
| You have one spare day and a car and driver | Possible in theory, but the road alone is over 4 hours with no traffic, so we would not plan it |
| You can spend a night | Drive down, sleep in Tissamaharama, and do the park from there |
| You rely on buses with no confirmed times | Allow two days and keep a spare, since we found no official timetable |
Is there a bus from Ella to Yala?
We could not confirm one. The NTC inter-provincial fare table effective 6 July 2026 lists route ends only, and in the rows we read it has no Ella to Yala, Ella to Tissamaharama or Ella to Kataragama row. The table gives no stops or times. One way to try is to go to Wellawaya or Tissamaharama first, so ask at the Ella and Wellawaya bus stands about a bus toward Tissamaharama or Kataragama. We found no source that confirms such a service. We quote no fare for any such leg, and we found no source for times.
What about Kataragama?
Kataragama is a separate stop on the same road system. On our samples:
| Leg in our sample | Distance | OSRM time |
|---|---|---|
| Ella to Kataragama, first route (via the B35) | 88.5 km | 1 h 41 min |
| Ella to Kataragama, alternative | 94.2 km | 1 h 46 min |
| Wellawaya to Kataragama | 61.3 km | 1 h 7 min |
| Tissamaharama to Kataragama | 17.3 km | 19 min |
Our Kataragama sacred precinct page covers the site, and our sacred sites guide covers dress and conduct. We make no claim about opening times.
Which base should you choose?
- Tissamaharama. The usual overnight base for the Palatupana side, 15.9 km and about 25 minutes from Palatupana on our sample.
- Hambantota. On our sample it is 107.9 km from Ella, close to the Palatupana distance. We have not compared its rooms or road to the park.
- Staying in Ella. Only if you are happy with a very long road day, per the arithmetic above.
If you are still choosing a park, our Udawalawe or Yala guide compares the two, and our Udawalawe National Park page covers the other option.
