Jaffna to Trincomalee by Bus and Road
Jaffna to Trincomalee: NTC route 88 bus fares from the July 2026 table, the Vavuniya split, an OSRM road sample, the Anuradhapura detour and a dated 29 October 2026 weather check.

How much is the bus from Jaffna to Trincomalee?
Quick answer: The National Transport Commission (NTC) fare table in force from 6 July 2026 lists route 88, Trincomalee to Jaffna, at Rs 1,092 on a normal bus, Rs 1,638 semi-luxury and Rs 2,083 air-conditioned luxury. By road it is about 236 km and 4 hours 30 minutes with no traffic on an OpenStreetMap sample from Jaffna to Trincomalee, and the route runs through Vavuniya. The table gives route ends only, so it shows no stops, no departure times and no travel time. Two buses via Vavuniya cost Rs 1,101 on normal fares, Rs 9 more than direct, so the direct bus is the simple choice.
| NTC route | From and to as listed | Normal | Semi-luxury | Air-conditioned luxury |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 88 | Trincomalee to Jaffna | Rs 1,092 | Rs 1,638 | Rs 2,083 |
The table lists the route in the Trincomalee to Jaffna direction. It does not publish a separate fare for the other direction, so we read the same fare as applying both ways, which is our assumption. The three fare columns follow the table's own headings. The table gives no stops, no departure times and no departure point, so ask at the bus stand in Jaffna before you travel. We found no official timetable we could read. We also cannot say how long the bus takes, because our road sample is for a car with no traffic.
What does the bus cost if you split the trip at Vavuniya?
Vavuniya sits between the two towns on our map route. The same table lists a bus to each end.
| NTC route | From and to | Normal | Semi-luxury | Air-conditioned luxury |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 87-3 | Vavuniya to Jaffna | Rs 656 | not listed | not listed |
| 88-2 | Vavuniya to Trincomalee | Rs 445 | Rs 668 | Rs 874 |
| 88-6 | Mannar to Trincomalee | Rs 784 | Rs 1,176 | not listed |
"Not listed" means the table has a dash in that column. It does not tell you whether such a bus exists.
Rs 656 plus Rs 445 is Rs 1,101 on normal fares, our own arithmetic. That is Rs 9 more than the direct Rs 1,092. So splitting the trip does not save money on normal buses, and you would need to change buses and wait. Only the Vavuniya to Trincomalee leg has all three fare columns, and the Vavuniya to Jaffna row shows a normal fare only.
What is the road route and how long does it take?
We sampled the road on 29 October 2026 between the town centres of Jaffna and Trincomalee. The map's first answer from Jaffna was 236.0 km and about 4 hours 30 minutes with no traffic. It joins the A9 south, then the A29 and A12 east for the last part. It used a mix of main and local roads for the first leg, and the map also offered a longer alternative of 249.1 km and about 4 hours 41 minutes.
| Leg in our sample | Distance | OSRM time |
|---|---|---|
| Jaffna to Trincomalee | 236.0 km | 4 h 30 min |
| Trincomalee to Jaffna | 241.1 km | 4 h 30 min |
| Jaffna to Vavuniya | 138.5 km | 2 h 36 min |
| Vavuniya to Trincomalee | 97.6 km | 1 h 54 min |
| Jaffna to Anuradhapura | 197.9 km | 3 h 44 min |
| Anuradhapura to Trincomalee | 107.0 km | 1 h 59 min |
The two Vavuniya legs add up to 236.1 km, which matches the direct sample, so the direct road does pass through Vavuniya on this map. Going the other way, the map gave 241.1 km for the same 4 hours 30 minutes, which shows how much a different road choice can change the distance.
These are single samples, not a promise about the path any driver will take. Real trips take longer because of traffic, towns, stops and rain. Our driving guide covers road rules, and our map and distances guide puts the two towns in context.
Should you go through Anuradhapura instead?
Only if you want to stop there. On our samples, Jaffna to Anuradhapura is 197.9 km and Anuradhapura to Trincomalee is 107.0 km. Together that is 304.9 km and about 5 hours 43 minutes, which is about 68.9 km and 73 minutes more than the direct sample. The NTC table lists Anuradhapura to Trincomalee (route 835) at Rs 496 on a normal bus. We did not read a Jaffna to Anuradhapura fare in the rows we checked, so we do not price that leg.
Our Anuradhapura destination guide covers what to see there. Plan the extra time and check opening hours close to travel.
What is in Jaffna and Trincomalee at each end?
This page is about the trip, so we keep the ends short.
- Jaffna: our Jaffna destination guide and northern Sri Lanka region guide cover the north. Jaffna Fort is a place page.
- Trincomalee: our Trincomalee guide and east coast guide cover the east. Koneswaram Temple is a sacred site, so follow our sacred sites guide.
- Weather at the east end: our Trincomalee November weather guide shows normal rain for the month.
If you are arriving by air and heading north first, our Colombo airport to Jaffna guide covers that leg, and our Colombo to Trincomalee bus and road guide covers the other end of the island.
What is the weather and landslide check for this route? (Checked 29 October 2026)
- Landslide warning: the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) landslide early warning LEWM-28-10-2026-1600-35, published by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), is valid from 4 pm on 28 October to 4 pm on 29 October 2026 and lists no area at Level 3 (Red). It lists no district in the Northern, North-central or Eastern provinces, so Jaffna, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura and Trincomalee districts are not on it.
- Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 29 October 2026 expected mainly fair weather in the areas not named for showers, and it named no Northern Province or Trincomalee district for showers that day.
- Sea: the sea area forecast issued at 5.30 am on 29 October 2026 says cyclonic storm Arnab, over the north coast of Andhra Pradesh in India, has weakened into a deep depression, and the warning for multi-day boats in the deep south-west Bay of Bengal is withdrawn. It expects winds of 25 to 35 kmph, up to 45 kmph at times, and seas that are fairly rough at times from Puttalam to Mullaitivu via Kankesanthurai and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, with gusts of 60 to 70 kmph and very rough seas possible in thundershowers. Our road route is inland, so this matters only if you add a coast or boat stop.
- What to do: call 117, the DMC hotline, and check the Met bulletin before you leave and again at your first stop. Our monsoon seasons guide explains the wider pattern.
If a warning applies on your travel day, ask for a daylight arrival and be ready to change the plan.
What should you ask before you travel?
- Where does the bus leave from, and is it the normal, semi-luxury or air-conditioned service? The NTC table gives route ends only.
- How long will it take and where does it stop? No official time was found, so ask the conductor.
- Is there a bus to Vavuniya if I want to split the trip? The table lists one to each end, and we cannot confirm times.
- What is the plan if rain or a warning changes the road? Keep one spare day.
