How do you get from Hiriketiya to Mirissa?

Quick answer: It is about 33 km by road, roughly 39 minutes in a car with no traffic, all on the A2 coast road. A taxi or a hired tuk-tuk is the simplest way. The cheapest way is a local bus, usually with a change at Matara, but we could not verify a last bus time, so ask on the day. There is no train at Hiriketiya; the nearest station on the coast line is Matara, about 22 km away by road, and trains run from there to Mirissa.

Hiriketiya is the small horseshoe bay at Dikwella. Mirissa is the beach town where the whale boats leave from. Matara, the main town of the district, sits between them. If you are still choosing where to base yourself, read our Hiriketiya page and our Mirissa page first.

How far is it, and what are the choices?

OSRM measures the road from Hiriketiya Bay to the middle of Mirissa town at 33.1 km and 39 minutes with no traffic. The road is the A2, the same coast road that runs from Galle to Matara and on to Tangalle. Real trips take longer with buses, tuk-tuks and rain.

The two legs through Matara add up to 33.3 km, almost the same as the direct road, so going through Matara costs you very little extra distance. It only costs you the wait for the second vehicle.

Which way should you go? Five quick rules

  1. Heavy bags or a fixed time to meet someone: book a taxi. One vehicle, no changes.
  2. Light bags and no deadline: take a bus to Matara and look for a bus or a tuk-tuk from there to Mirissa. This is usually the lowest-cost way, but the price depends on the bus type.
  3. You like trains and have a daypack: go to Matara and take the coast line train west. Allow time to check which trains stop at Mirissa.
  4. Going at dawn for a whale boat: do not count on a public bus. See the whale-trip section below.
  5. Rain is heavy: pay for the taxi. A tuk-tuk is open at the sides, and waiting at a roadside stop in heavy rain is no fun.

Can you take a bus from Hiriketiya to Mirissa?

Probably yes, in two steps, but we cannot show you a timetable. The National Transport Commission publishes full-route fares, not local stops or times. Its July 2026 list includes route 333, Matara to Kataragama, at Rs 598 for the full route in a normal bus, and route 32-4, Colombo to Tangalle, at Rs 861 normal, Rs 1,292 semi-luxury and Rs 1,651 air-conditioned. Those are end-to-end fares. A short hop costs less, and the conductor sets the price for the part you ride.

The list does not say which stops each bus makes. Dikwella is on the same road as Matara and Tangalle, so ask at the roadside which bus goes to Matara. Our Hiriketiya page notes that the town is spelled both Dikwella and Dickwella, so look for either spelling. The bay is about 1.4 km from the middle of Dikwella town by road (OSRM), so you may need a short ride between the bay and the main road. Check where the buses stop.

What to ask the conductor before you sit down:

  • Does this bus stop in Mirissa, or do I get off in Matara?
  • What is the fare for my stop, and can I pay now?
  • Is there a later bus today going back east, if I am doing a day trip?

Do not plan around a late bus. We could not verify a last departure, so treat the afternoon as the safe time to travel and keep a taxi number for the evening.

Is there a train from Hiriketiya to Mirissa?

Not from Hiriketiya. Our Hiriketiya page lists Matara and Beliatta as the nearest rail anchors. The coast line stops at Beliatta, and Matara is the bigger of the two. From Matara to Mirissa is about 9.3 km on the line, and the station table puts Mirissa at 147.556 km and Matara at 156.813 km from Colombo Fort. Between Matara and Mirissa the station table also lists Kamburugamuwa and Walgama, so ask which trains stop at Mirissa.

The published fare table gives prices from Colombo Fort only, so there is no printed fare for Matara to Mirissa. For scale, Mirissa is Rs 1,100 first class, Rs 550 second and Rs 280 third from Colombo Fort, and Matara is Rs 1,150, Rs 600 and Rs 300. That table is dated July 2022, so confirm at the station. For timetables, use the Sri Lanka Railways seat reservation site or ask at Matara station; the railway's own timetable site did not load when we tried on 18 and 23 October, as noted on our getting around guide and our Colombo to Galle train page.

What about a tuk-tuk or a taxi?

There is no official tuk-tuk tariff that we can quote, and we do not publish a price we could not check. Our Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa guide says the same about Matara to Mirissa. A few things help whichever vehicle you pick:

  • Agree the price for the whole ride before you get in, and say whether it is per vehicle or per person.
  • Ask whether the driver will wait if you stop on the way.
  • Say your exact drop-off. Mirissa has a beach, a harbour and a station, and they are not the same place.
  • If the driver wants to use a toll road, ask who pays. On this stretch the A2 is the direct road, so there is usually no need.

Can you get from Hiriketiya to a Mirissa whale boat in the morning?

Whale watching from the south coast is scheduled from November to April, and the Sri Lanka Navy's site listed southern cruises from Galle for those months when we checked on 17 October. Private boats leave from Mirissa harbour. One operator on our Mirissa page listed a 6.00 am check-in on 14 October 2026. Check your own boat's time.

The sum is simple. If check-in is 6.00 am and the road takes 39 minutes with no traffic, you need to leave before 5.00 am to have any slack. Public buses are unlikely to suit that start, though we could not verify any early timetable. The safe choices are a taxi booked the night before, or sleeping in Mirissa the night before. Read our whale watching guide for how to choose a trip.

What is the weather like this weekend?

On 23 October 2026 the Department of Meteorology, as reported by Colombo Tribune, said rain is expected to continue in the south-west until 27 October. For 24 October it forecast showers or thundershowers at times in the Galle and Matara districts, with a warning about strong gusts and lightning in thundershowers. Hiriketiya and Mirissa are both in Matara District. Leave extra time, and book a car rather than waiting at a roadside stop in a storm. Re-read the forecast on the morning you travel.

For the longer view, Matara District averages 339.1 mm of rain in October, 333.3 mm in November and 200.3 mm in December on the Department of Meteorology's 1991 to 2020 figures, as quoted on our Hiriketiya page.

How far is Hiriketiya from Mirissa?

About 33.1 km by road, around 39 minutes with no traffic, on an OpenStreetMap route from Hiriketiya Bay to the middle of Mirissa town checked on 24 October 2026. Real journeys take longer.

Is there a direct bus from Hiriketiya to Mirissa?

We could not confirm one. The NTC fare list gives the two ends of each route, not the stops, so ask the conductor whether the bus goes through Mirissa or ends at Matara. Many people change at Matara.

Is there a train station at Hiriketiya?

No. The nearest rail anchors on our Hiriketiya page are Matara and Beliatta. Matara is about 22.3 km from Hiriketiya by road on the OpenStreetMap route we checked. From Matara, the coast line runs west to Mirissa, about 9.3 km on the line.

We do not have a verified price. There is no official tariff that we can quote. Agree the full price before you set off and ask whether it is per vehicle.

Can I get to Mirissa for a 6 am whale boat from Hiriketiya?

Only with a car or taxi, and you would need to leave before 5 am if the road takes 39 minutes. Whale watching runs November to April, and boats leave from Mirissa harbour. Check the check-in time with your operator. Sleeping in Mirissa the night before avoids the early drive.

Which is closer to Hiriketiya, Mirissa or Tangalle?

Tangalle. It is about 14.9 km from Hiriketiya by road, against 33.1 km to Mirissa, on OpenStreetMap routes checked 24 October 2026.

Is it safe to travel in the rain this week?

Check before you go. On 23 October the Department of Meteorology said rain would continue in the south-west until 27 October, with showers forecast in Galle and Matara districts on 24 October. Allow extra time and avoid travelling in heavy thunderstorms if you can.

What is the best way to do Hiriketiya to Mirissa with luggage?

A taxi or car with driver. It avoids the change at Matara and keeps your bags in one place.
