How do you get from Weligama to Mirissa?

Quick answer: It is only about 5 km, around 7 minutes in a car with no traffic, along the A2 coast road. Most people take a tuk-tuk or a short bus ride. The train covers the gap in about 4.7 km on the line, and there is one small station between the two. We could not verify bus or train times, and there is no official tuk-tuk price that we can quote, so agree the price before you set off.

Weligama and Mirissa are neighbours, so many people sleep in one and visit the other. Our Weligama page says the two are under 5 km apart on the line, and our Weligama vs Mirissa vs Tangalle guide says they are about 5 km and 7 minutes by road. This page is about the hop, and not about which one to pick.

What are the options for such a short hop?

The road distance from the middle of Weligama to the middle of Mirissa is 5.2 km, and the rail distance is 4.7 km. These match the "under 5 km along the line" on our Weligama page.

Should you walk?

It depends on the weather and your bags. 5.2 km is a long walk in the tropical heat and on a coast road shared with buses and tuk-tuks. We found no safety or pavement information for this road, so we do not describe the walk as easy or safe. If you want to walk, go in the cooler early morning or late afternoon, carry water and leave luggage with a driver. In rain, do not walk; the Department of Meteorology warned of thundershowers in this area on 24 October.

How does the train work between Weligama and Mirissa?

The Coast Line station table puts Weligama at 142.824 km and Mirissa at 147.556 km from Colombo Fort. That is 4.7 km on the line. One small station, Polwathumodara at 146.248 km, sits between them. The train is therefore quick, but you would still need to get to the station at each end.

From Colombo Fort, the fare table dated July 2022 lists both Weligama and Mirissa at the same prices: Rs 1,100 first class, Rs 550 second and Rs 280 third. Our Weligama page and Mirissa page quote the same numbers. The table has no Weligama to Mirissa fare, because it only prices trips from Colombo Fort, so ask at the counter. We could not confirm times, and the railway's online timetable did not load on 18 or 23 October according to our getting around guide and Colombo to Galle train guide. Do not rely on a train for this hop if you have a boat to catch. Not every train stops at both stations.

What about the bus?

Buses use the A2 coast road between Galle and Matara. Our Mirissa page puts Mirissa on that road, and our Weligama page puts Weligama between Galle and Mirissa. The NTC fare list we checked gives full-route fares and does not list local stops or times, so we cannot give a bus fare or timetable. The practical advice is to stand on the A2 in Weligama, ask which bus goes toward Matara and stops at Mirissa, ask the fare before you pay, and ask the conductor to tell you when you reach your stop. We have no fare to quote.

Which should you choose? A short decision guide

  1. Going between your hotel and a whale boat: use a tuk-tuk or taxi booked the day before. Whale season on our Mirissa page is November to April, and boats leave from Mirissa harbour. One operator listed a 6.00 am check-in on 14 October 2026.
  2. Light bag, relaxed day, a few minutes to spare: take the bus or the train if one is coming.
  3. Surfboard: a tuk-tuk or taxi. Ask the driver if the board fits before you agree a price.
  4. Evening dinner in Mirissa from a Weligama base: go by tuk-tuk, and agree a return price. We could not verify a last bus or train.
  5. Heavy rain: take a taxi.

What do tuk-tuk drivers charge?

There is no official tuk-tuk tariff that we could quote, and we do not publish a price we could not check. Our Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa guide says that for the last leg into Mirissa you should agree a tuk-tuk fare before setting off. These steps help:

  • Agree the price for the whole ride before you get in, and say whether it is per vehicle.
  • Say your exact stop: Mirissa beach, Mirissa harbour or Mirissa station are different places.
  • For a round trip, agree the waiting time and the return price.
  • Ask a few people, or your guesthouse, what a normal fare looks like.

What is the weather this weekend?

On 23 October 2026 the Department of Meteorology, as reported by Colombo Tribune, said rain would continue in the south-west until 27 October. For 24 October it forecast showers or thundershowers at times in the Galle and Matara districts, with a warning about strong gusts and lightning. Weligama and Mirissa are both in Matara District. For October as a whole, Galle, the nearest long-term station, averages 344.5 mm of rain on the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals that our Weligama page uses. If it is wet, take a car for such a short hop.
