Why is Sigiriya first?
Sigiriya is the place most people picture when they think of Sri Lanka: a rock fortress on UNESCO's World Heritage List. It is also the costliest ticket on the CCF list, at USD 35 (LKR 11,760 at the CCF rate of LKR 336 to the dollar). The CCF lists it as open from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm. Climb early, before the heat.
The Dambulla Cave Temple is about 17 km away, so most people pair the two. Our Sigiriya vs Dambulla guide helps you pick a base.
Which places are for history and temples?
Five of the ten are about Sri Lanka's past:
- Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa: two ancient capitals, both UNESCO properties and both USD 30. Most people choose one. Our Anuradhapura vs Polonnaruwa guide compares them.
- Dambulla Cave Temple: a UNESCO cave temple. Sri Lanka Tourism lists a USD 10 fee, paid at the office near the Golden Temple.
- Kandy: the Sacred City of Kandy is a UNESCO property, and the Temple of the Tooth is its centre. The CCF tickets page lists the temple as open 7.00 am to 5.00 pm. The temple's own website did not load on 24 October 2026, so check its ticket price there.
- Galle Fort: UNESCO lists the Old Town of Galle and its fortifications. Walking the walls is free. The CCF lists the Galle museum at USD 6.
The CCF round ticket covers Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and the archaeological museums. See our entry ticket prices guide for the full list.
Which places are for nature and beaches?
- Ella: a hill town on the edge of the Central Highlands. It is the longest drive from the airport of the main loop, at about 3 hours 51 minutes with no traffic, so most people arrive from Kandy instead.
- Yala National Park: Sri Lanka's best-known safari park, about 294 km from the airport to the Palatupana area. Park fees are set by the Department of Wildlife Conservation and were not in the sources we checked today. Our Udawalawe vs Yala guide has more.
- Mirissa: a south coast beach town, about 176 km and 2 hours 22 minutes from the airport, mostly on the expressway.
Is Jaffna worth adding?
Yes, if you have the time. Sri Lanka Tourism describes Jaffna as a mix of colonial charm and Tamil culture, with Hindu and Buddhist temples on the peninsula and its islands. It is the furthest place on this list: about 375 km and 6 hours 52 minutes from the airport with no traffic. Jaffna's rain normals are also different from the south: its wettest month is November, with 437 mm on average, and it is very dry in June and July. For a full plan, see our Jaffna and the north in 7 days itinerary.
When is the best time to see them?
There is no single best month for all ten. The table shows the driest months at each nearest station on WMO normals. Two patterns stand out:
- January to March is dry in the south and west: Galle and Colombo airport (Katunayake) have their least rain in January and February.
- June to August is dry in the north and the Cultural Triangle: Anuradhapura averages 15 mm in June and Jaffna 18 mm.
October and November are the wettest months at most of these stations. Our best time to visit guide goes month by month.
How many days do I need?
| Trip length | Which of the ten fit |
|---|---|
| 5 days | Sigiriya, Dambulla, Kandy, Galle |
| 10 days | Add Polonnaruwa or Anuradhapura, Ella and Mirissa |
| 14 days | Add Yala and the other ancient city |
| 3 weeks | All ten, with Jaffna by bus or road from Anuradhapura (about 202 km, 3 h 43 min) |
For exact plans, see how many days in Sri Lanka and our 14-day first-timers itinerary.
What about the other UNESCO sites?
UNESCO lists eight World Heritage properties in Sri Lanka. Two are not on our top 10: Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a rainforest about 2 hours 20 minutes from Colombo, and the Central Highlands, which include Horton Plains. Both suit travellers who want walks rather than sights. Sinharaja also works as a long day trip from Colombo.
