Is May a good time to visit Sri Lanka?

Quick answer: Yes, if you go east or north. In May the south-west monsoon brings heavy rain to Colombo and the south coast, but the east coast around Arugam Bay, Pasikudah and Nilaveli and the far north around Jaffna are in their dry season. May 2027 also has Vesak on 19 and 20 May, when towns fill with lanterns. Skip the south coast beaches this month.

What is the weather like in Sri Lanka in May?

Wet in the south-west, dry and hot in the east and north. The table uses the WMO 1991 to 2020 climate normals (WMO normals, Sri Lanka stations). "Rain days" counts days with at least 1 mm. Stations are sorted from driest to wettest.

Galle (south coast)315.917.230.4 (87)26.0 (79)

Two things matter for planning. Galle gets more than six times the rain of Pottuvil in May, on about 17 days against 4. And the east is hot: Trincomalee averages 35.2 C (95 F) by day. Plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning and late afternoon.

Sri Lanka Tourism's beach page explains the switch: "The South West winds make the East Coast waters quiet with the constant sun shine" (Sri Lanka Tourism, beaches).

When is Vesak in 2027, and what happens?

Vesak Full Moon Poya Day is Wednesday 19 May 2027, and Thursday 20 May 2027 is the day after. Both are public and bank holidays in the government's 2027 holiday gazette (Gazette No. 2493/05). May 2027 has two other holidays too:

Date (2027)DayHolidayType
1 MaySaturdayMay Day (International Workers' Day)Public and bank holiday
17 MayMondayId-Ul-Alha (Hadji Festival Day)Public and bank holiday
19 MayWednesdayVesak Full Moon Poya DayPublic and bank holiday
20 MayThursdayDay following Vesak Full Moon Poya DayPublic and bank holiday

Vesak is the full-moon poya day of May, and it is the only poya in the 2027 gazette that is followed by an extra holiday. Towns put up paper lanterns and large lit panels called pandols that tell stories from the Buddha's life, like the one in the photo at the top of this page. With a holiday on Monday 17 May and two more on 19 and 20 May, the week of 17 to 21 May 2027 will be busy. Book trains and hotels early, and dress modestly at temples. Our festival calendar lists every poya day.

Can you see whales in Sri Lanka in May?

Yes, on the east coast. The Sri Lanka Navy's schedule page lists cruises from Trincomalee from May to October, every Saturday and Sunday at 07:00 from Nicholson Cove pier, lasting 5 hours (Sri Lanka Navy schedules).

Navy cruiseSeasonForeign adult (incl. tax)About in LKR
From TrincomaleeMay to OctoberUS$7022,900
From Galle (south coast)November to AprilUS$8026,100

In May, only the Trincomalee cruise is in season. LKR figures use the Central Bank's buying rate for 16 October 2026 and are rounded. Stay in Nilaveli or Trincomalee for the easiest start.

What else is good in May?

  • Kitesurfing in Kalpitiya. Kiteclub Kalpitiya says its summer season runs from mid-May to mid-October (Kiteclub Kalpitiya). Late May is the start.
  • Surf on the east coast. Our Arugam Bay guide gives Sri Lanka Tourism's surf season as April to October.
  • The ancient cities. Rain is far lower in Anuradhapura in May (93.8 mm) than in April (180.1 mm) on the WMO normals.
  • Adam's Peak, early in the month only. Sri Lanka Tourism says "Sri pada season begin in December and it is end in May" and that outside those months the climb is hard because of "very heavy rain, extreme wind, and thick mist" (Sri Lanka Tourism, Sri Pada).

Is May busy in Sri Lanka?

No, it is one of the quieter months. SLTDA counted 145,745 tourist arrivals in May 2026, up 9.6% on 132,919 in May 2025 (SLTDA May 2026 report). That is about half of the 279,328 arrivals SLTDA counted in February 2026. The busy days in May are local holidays, especially Vesak week, when Sri Lankans travel.

Is May or June better?

StationMay rain (mm)June rain (mm)Change
Jaffna66.218.5Much drier in June
Trincomalee71.825.9Much drier in June
Pottuvil48.213.7Much drier in June

Colombo313.6196.7Still wet
Galle315.9184.0Still wet
Nuwara Eliya171.7168.3About the same

June is drier in the north, east and Cultural Triangle, and less wet in the south-west. May has Vesak and the end of the Adam's Peak season. If you want the driest possible east coast week, June is the better month. If you want Vesak, go in May.

Is the end of May a good time to go?

For the east and north, yes. The climate normals are monthly averages, so they cannot split early and late May. What they do show is that May is the wettest month of the first half of the year at Colombo, Galle and the airport station, so the west and south coasts stay a poor beach bet all month. The Adam's Peak season ends in May, so do not plan that climb for the last days of the month, and avoid Vesak week (17 to 21 May 2027) if you want quiet roads.

What should you pack for May?

  • A light rain jacket or umbrella if any of your route is in the west, south or hills.
  • Sun protection and a hat for the east coast, where highs reach 34 to 35 C (93 to 95 F).
  • A warm layer for Nuwara Eliya, where nights average 13.4 C (56 F).
  • Modest clothes for temples, which you will need for Vesak visits.
