Ahangama

A surf village between Galle and Weligama. Sampled surf lesson prices from three schools, four dated room prices from the properties' own pages, train fares and when to go, checked 17 October 2026.

Is Ahangama worth visiting?

Yes, if surfing is the main reason for your trip. Ahangama is a string of small beaches and surf breaks on the coast road between Galle and Weligama. Surf schools there teach on a mix of beach breaks and reefs, with group lessons from LKR 5,000 (about US$15) on 17 October 2026. Go between November and April; outside those months the south-west monsoon makes the sea rough.

Ahangama sits between Galle and Mirissa on the south coast. It is a base for surfing more than for swimming or sightseeing, so many people pair it with a few nights somewhere else.

A tip from the US embassy's advice for Sri Lanka: some surf schools have claimed that renters damaged boards and demanded high repair fees. Photograph any rented board before you use it. See is Sri Lanka safe for the rest of that advice.

When is the surf season in Ahangama?

About October or November to April. Soul & Surf says peak surf season runs from October to April, and PONO Surf Camp welcomes surfers on the south coast from November to April. That matches the weather: Galle, the nearest Met Department station, averages just 86.8 mm of rain in January on the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals (NOAA NCEI copy).

  • Mid-range: small guesthouses near Kabalana beach list from about US$36 to US$71.
  • Christmas and New Year cost more. Villa Mugatiya's own rate card jumps from US$620 to US$840 a night for 20 December to 3 January, with a 5-night minimum.

Before you book, check whether breakfast is included, whether the room has air conditioning, and how far it is from your surf school's meeting point.

How do you get to Ahangama?

By car or by coast line train. Sri Lanka Railways' Colombo Fort fare table, checked on 17 October 2026, lists these stations near Ahangama (fare PDF):

Not every train stops at Ahangama. Teya Beach's own page suggests taking the train to Weligama or Matara and a 15 to 20 minute tuk-tuk, and says the drive from Colombo takes 2.5 to 3 hours on the Southern Expressway. From the airport, the Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa guide explains the expressway and how to compare driver quotes.

What else is there to do in Ahangama?

Ahangama is about surf, cafes and slow days. For sights, go a short way along the coast.

  • Watch or surf the local breaks. Soul & Surf names the breaks around Ahangama, Kabalana, Weligama and Midigama, "a mix of mellow beach breaks and more challenging reefs". Teya Beach describes The Rock at Kabalana as "the village's biggest wave".
  • Day trip to Galle Fort. Galle is 20 km back along the railway. Walk the ramparts in the late afternoon; see the Galle Fort guide.
  • Whale trips from Mirissa. Mirissa harbour is about 13 km further along the line. The Navy season is November to April; check the Mirissa guide for the operator prices we sampled.
  • Rest days. Studio Olive runs jewellery workshops for guests on its own site, one example of what fills the non-surf days.

If it is your first time on a board, a sandy bay is easier. If you have had a few lessons, Ahangama's schools can take you to a break that suits you. Either way, all three are in season at the same time, from about November to April.

Frequently asked questions

How much are surf lessons in Ahangama?

On the schools' own pages on 17 October 2026: Ashen Surf School LKR 5,000 per person in a group of 5 and LKR 7,000 for a private beginner lesson; PONO Surf Camp LKR 10,000 in a group and LKR 15,000 private; Soul & Surf LKR 16,000 in a group of 3 to 5 and LKR 25,000 private. When is the surf season in Ahangama?

Roughly October or November to April. Soul & Surf says peak surf season runs from October to April, and PONO Surf Camp welcomes surfers on the south coast from November to April. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rougher, messier seas.

Where should I stay in Ahangama?

Pick by budget and by how close you want to be to Kabalana beach. Sampled 17 October 2026 on each property's own page: Studio Olive from LKR 9,000 a night for a double; Teya Beach from US$35.70 to US$71.40, 200 m from Kabalana beach; Teddies' Seaview Suite US$110 to US$240 with breakfast; and Villa Mugatiya, a whole villa for up to 8 adults, from US$430 to US$840 a night.

How do I get to Ahangama from Colombo?

By car via the Southern Expressway, or by coast line train. Sri Lanka Railways lists Ahangama at 134.17 km from Colombo Fort, at LKR 1,050 in 1st class, LKR 550 in 2nd and LKR 260 in 3rd. Not every train stops there, so check, or ride to Weligama and take a short tuk-tuk.

Is Ahangama good for beginners?

Yes, in season. All three schools we checked teach beginners, and Soul & Surf says it mixes mellow beach breaks with more challenging reefs depending on your level. Book a lesson rather than paddling out alone on a reef.

Ahangama or Weligama: which is better?

Weligama is a wide sandy bay often used for first surf lessons. Ahangama is a spread-out stretch of coast with several breaks, including reefs, that suits improving surfers. The two are about 9 km apart by rail, and schools such as Soul & Surf take students to breaks in both.
