Koggala
A quiet beach and lake area a few kilometres east of Galle, known for stilt fishing, boat trips to Madol Duwa island and the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum. Best from about December to March; wettest in May and October.
Is Koggala worth visiting?
Quick answer: Yes, as a calm base or a half-day trip from Galle. Koggala is a quiet stretch of the south coast a few kilometres east of Galle, with a large lake where boats take you to Madol Duwa island, stilt fishermen at dawn, and the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum. It is quieter than Unawatuna, with fewer cafes. Go between December and March, when the south coast is driest.
Where is Koggala?
Koggala is in Galle District on Sri Lanka's south coast. The Southern Province's tourist bureau places Koggala Beach "just a few kilometers east of Galle", a 15-minute drive from Galle town and "about 2.5 hours from Colombo by car" (Ruhunu Tourist Bureau, Koggala Beach). SLTDA lists Koggala in its South Coast Resort Region, between Unawatuna and Weligama (SLTDA development projects).
Three things sit close together here: the beach, Koggala Lake behind it, and the village where the writer Martin Wickramasinghe was born. On this site Koggala is part of the south coast region, with Galle to the west and Ahangama and Weligama to the east.
What can you do in Koggala?
The tourist bureau's pages give the basics for each activity. Here they are side by side, with what we could and could not confirm.
| Activity | Best time (tourist bureau) | How long | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stilt fishing viewing | About 6:00 to 8:00 am; also late afternoon | 30 to 60 minutes is enough to watch | Free to watch; tips expected for photos |
| Koggala Lake boat safari | Early morning; or late afternoon before sunset | Usually 1 to 2 hours | No official price; agree it first |
| Madol Duwa island | By boat, as part of a lake trip | Add time on the island | No official price |
| Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum | Daytime, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm | 1 to 2 hours | Not confirmed today |
| Beach time | Early morning and late afternoon | Half a day | Free |
The "how long" figures for stilt fishing and the museum are our planning estimates, not official times.
Stilt fishing
Stilt fishing is "one of Sri Lanka's most iconic and traditional fishing techniques", and the bureau calls Koggala "one of the best places to witness" it. Fishermen balance on horizontal poles set into shallow water and fish with simple rods. The best time is "around 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM", when the water is calm and they are actively fishing (Ruhunu Tourist Bureau, stilt fishing). The museum page notes that watching is free but "tips appreciated for photography". Agree any photo fee before you raise the camera.
Koggala Lake boat safari and Madol Duwa
The bureau describes Koggala Lake as "one of the largest natural lakes in Sri Lanka", with small islands, mangroves and birds such as kingfishers, herons and egrets. Safaris "usually last around 1 to 2 hours", and the early morning is best for wildlife (Ruhunu Tourist Bureau, lagoon boat safari).
Madol Duwa is a small island in the lake, reached by boat. It is the setting of Martin Wickramasinghe's novel Madol Doova, and it has trees, shade and "a small Buddhist temple" (Ruhunu Tourist Bureau, Madol Duwa). Dress modestly if you visit the temple.
Boat price check: there is no official fare. Before you step in, agree the total price, the length of the trip, whether Madol Duwa is included and whether life jackets are on board.
Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum
Martin Wickramasinghe, one of Sri Lanka's best-known writers, was born in Koggala. The museum covers his life and rural folk culture, with old tools, pottery, fishing gear, masks and a small model of Madol Duwa, and it has a bookshop (Ruhunu Tourist Bureau, folk museum). The bureau says it is about a 10-minute drive from Koggala Beach.
The same page gives two different opening patterns, "Daily, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM" in one section and "Monday to Saturday" in another. If you plan a Sunday visit, call ahead. The museum's own website did not load when we checked on 18 October 2026, so we could not confirm the ticket price.
When is the best time to visit Koggala?
December to March is the dry window. The table uses the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for Galle, the nearest long-record station (WMO normals, Sri Lanka stations). "Rain days" counts days with at least 1 mm.
| Month | Rain (mm) | Rain days | High C (F) | Low C (F) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | 86.8 | 6.6 | 29.9 (86) | 23.4 (74) |
| Feb | 71.1 | 5.8 | 30.7 (87) | 23.7 (75) |
| Mar | 89.9 | 6.9 | 31.6 (89) | 24.6 (76) |
| Apr | 201.9 | 11.8 | 31.4 (89) | 25.3 (78) |
| May | 315.9 | 17.2 | 30.4 (87) | 26.0 (79) |
| Jun | 184.0 | 16.6 | 29.4 (85) | 25.7 (78) |
| Jul | 172.6 | 15.1 | 29.0 (84) | 25.4 (78) |
| Aug | 161.9 | 14.2 | 29.0 (84) | 25.4 (78) |
| Sep | 260.9 | 17.1 | 29.2 (85) | 25.2 (77) |
| Oct | 344.5 | 18.2 | 29.4 (85) | 24.8 (77) |
| Nov | 282.6 | 14.9 | 29.9 (86) | 24.2 (76) |
| Dec | 175.9 | 11.2 | 29.9 (86) | 23.7 (75) |
October is the wettest month (344.5 mm over about 18 days) and May the second wettest. December is a transition month: wetter than January but far drier than November. The tourist bureau's museum page also names December to April as Koggala's dry season.
Which activity suits which month? Stilt fishing and boat trips need calm water, so plan them for December to March. The museum is indoors, so it is the best rainy-day plan in Koggala.
Can you see whales from Koggala?
Yes, in season, by boat from Galle or Mirissa. The Sri Lanka Navy runs its southern cruises from Galle from November to April, five hours long, at US$80 for a foreign adult (US$60 plus US$20 government tax, about LKR 26,100) and US$40 for a child aged 6 to 12 (Sri Lanka Navy schedules). Galle is about 15 minutes from Koggala by road, per the tourist bureau. Check the departure point and time for your date on the Navy site. Our whale watching in Sri Lanka page compares the Navy and private boats.
How do you get to Koggala?
By train, bus or road. Koggala has its own station on the coast line. These fares come from Sri Lanka Railways' fare table (fare PDF, read 18 October 2026). The file is dated July 2022, so check the fare at the counter.
| From Colombo Fort to | Distance by rail | 1st (LKR) | 2nd (LKR) | 3rd (LKR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galle | 113.89 km | 950 | 500 | 240 |
| Unawatuna | 119.53 km | 950 | 500 | 240 |
| Habaraduwa | 127.39 km | 1,000 | 500 | 260 |
| Koggala | 129.11 km | 1,000 | 500 | 260 |
By road, the tourist bureau gives about 2.5 hours from Colombo and a 15-minute drive from Galle, with regular buses between Galle and Koggala and tuk-tuks for the last stretch. From the airport, our Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa guide compares the options.
Where should you stay in Koggala?
Koggala has beach hotels and smaller places near the lake. We did not quote room prices, because the hotel sites we checked show a rate only after you pick dates. Two checks help:
- Beach side or lake side? Rooms by the lake suit boat trips and birdwatching; rooms by the beach suit early stilt-fishing walks.
- Ask how you will get around. Koggala is spread out between the beach, the lake and the museum, so ask whether the hotel can arrange tuk-tuks or bikes.
For lower-cost rooms with published rates, our Hiriketiya and Mirissa guesthouse guide has dated price samples a little further east. For a slower week here, the 7-day wellness itinerary uses the Koggala Lagoon area.
Koggala, Unawatuna or Galle: where should you base yourself?
| Base | Choose it for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Koggala | Quiet beach, lake trips, stilt fishing at dawn | Fewer cafes and restaurants; you will drive for nightlife |
| Unawatuna | A busy swimming bay with lots of places to eat | More people and noise |
| Galle | The fort, museums and walking | Not a beach base |
The tourist bureau describes Koggala as "less crowded than nearby Unawatuna", which matches the trade-off above.
