Matara to Mirissa: distance, train, bus and tuk-tuk
How far is Matara from Mirissa? About 8 km by road. The NTC normal-bus fare worked out from the stage table, the rail gap, how the expressway bus fits in, and what we could not confirm. Checked 24 October 2026.

How far is Matara from Mirissa?
Quick answer: About 8 km by road, and the trip takes 14 to 16 minutes with no traffic. Our Matara page measured 8.4 km between the two towns, and the route between the two railway stations is 9.6 km. A normal bus costs Rs 82 on our reading of the NTC stage table. Trains stop at both, but we could not confirm times or a station to station fare. A tuk-tuk has no official tariff, so agree the price first.
Matara is the city where the expressway buses end, and it has a larger town station on the coast line. Mirissa is the beach town known for whale boats. The hop between them is the last short step for many south coast trips, so this page starts with how far it is and then shows how to cover it.
Why do the distance numbers differ?
The answer depends on what you measure. Here is the same hop measured four ways.
| What is measured | Result | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Road, Matara town to Mirissa | 8.4 km, about 14 minutes | Our Matara page, OSRM, 20 Oct 2026 |
| Road, Matara station to Mirissa station | 9.6 km, about 16 minutes | OSRM, 24 Oct 2026 |
| Rail gap | 9.26 km | Worked out: 156.82 km minus 147.56 km from Colombo Fort |
| Bus stages, route 2 | 5 stages | NTC stage table: stage 79 minus stage 74 |
If a taxi driver or a map app gives you a different figure, it probably uses a different start or end point. The station is not in the middle of either town, so a few hundred metres either way is normal.
What does each option cost?
| Option | Cost we can source | Time we can source | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal bus, route 2 | Rs 82 (worked out from the NTC stage table) | Not confirmed; road time is about 14 to 16 minutes with no traffic | Cheapest published option; look for a route 2 bus heading west toward Galle |
| Train | No Matara to Mirissa fare on the table we can open | Not confirmed | Both towns have stations |
| Tuk-tuk | No official tariff | About 14 to 16 minutes with no traffic | Agree a price first |
| Taxi | No official tariff | About 14 to 16 minutes with no traffic | Ask about waiting time and bags |
How is the Rs 82 bus fare worked out?
The NTC lists route 2 (Colombo to Matara, along the Galle road) as numbered stops. A fare between two stops is the price of the difference in stage numbers. Matara is the last stop, stage 79. Mirissa is stage 74. The difference is 5 stages, and the table prices 5 stages at Rs 82.
A bus from Matara toward Weligama or Galle makes a few stops in those 5 stages before Mirissa, so ask the conductor to tell you when to get off. As a check on the method, 57 stages on the same table cost Rs 496, which is the Colombo to Galle fare on route 2-1 that we quote on our Colombo to Galle train guide.
Coming from Colombo: is Matara a good place to change?
Often, yes. Expressway buses end in Matara, and the last leg to Mirissa is local. The NTC expressway table, effective 6 July 2026 and quoted on our Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa guide, lists:
| NTC route | From | To | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| EX 1-18 | Colombo | Matara | Rs 1,320 |
| EX 1-1 | Makumbura | Matara | Rs 1,170 |
On the normal bus, route 2 from Colombo to Matara costs Rs 681, with Mirissa at stage 74 for Rs 640, according to the NTC normal-service table. The road bus stops often along the Galle road, so we would not call it quick, but it takes you to Mirissa without a change.
The rule we suggest: if you have bags, take the expressway bus to Matara and a tuk-tuk to Mirissa. If you have time and few bags, stay on the road bus to Mirissa. If you prefer a train, ride the coast line to Mirissa and skip Matara altogether. Matara to Mirissa is only the step you need if you finish on the expressway.
How do you go by train between Matara and Mirissa?
Both are stations on the coast line, with Mirissa 147.56 km and Matara 156.82 km from Colombo Fort. Here are the stations nearby, from the railway fare table dated July 2022 (still the published table on 23 October 2026), as printed on our Colombo to Galle train guide.
| Station | Rail distance from Colombo Fort | 3rd class fare from Colombo Fort (July 2022 table) |
|---|---|---|
| Weligama | 142.83 km | Rs 280 |
| Mirissa | 147.56 km | Rs 280 |
| Matara | 156.82 km | Rs 300 |
The gap between Mirissa and Matara by rail is 9.26 km, and between Weligama and Mirissa it is 4.73 km. The railway only publishes fares from Colombo Fort, so we have no Matara to Mirissa fare. Ask at the Matara counter, which the railway lists as a seat reservation office on this line, with the phone number on our Colombo to Galle train guide. The railway timetable did not load on 24 October 2026, and we do not guess times.
What is there to do in Matara before you leave?
If you have an hour or two before the next bus, our Matara page describes the Dutch Star Fort, built between 1763 and 1765, which now holds a Department of Archaeology museum. We found no official opening hours or ticket price, so ask at the gate. The Devinuwara lighthouse and the Vishnu temple are a short drive east of the town. If you visit the temple, cover your shoulders and knees and take off your shoes where asked. Our sacred sites guide has the details.
Can you see whales from here?
In season, yes. The south coast whale season on the Sri Lanka Navy's schedule runs from November to April, and the Navy sails its southern cruises from Galle past Mirissa. Private operators sail from Mirissa Harbour. One operator listed a 6.00 am check-in on our Mirissa guide (checked 14 October 2026), so if you plan a cruise, sleep in Mirissa the night before rather than travel from Matara that morning. Our whale watching guide compares the Navy and private boats.
What is the weather doing this weekend?
The Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 a.m. on 24 October 2026 expects showers or thundershowers after 1.00 p.m. elsewhere on the island, with fairly heavy falls above 50 mm likely at some places. It expects more rain in the south-western parts of the island over the next few days and warns of strong gusts and lightning. The sea off Galle and Matara may be rough at times.
On our Matara page, the Department's district averages give Matara District 339.1 mm in October and 333.3 mm in November, the wettest part of the year. January to March is the dry window. So the weather this weekend is normal for the season, but it is not the time for a long open-air tuk-tuk ride in the afternoon. Move in the morning if you can.
What should you check before you go?
- Times: none could be confirmed. Ask at the station or your guesthouse.
- Fare: carry small notes. The conductor sets the bus fare.
- Tuk-tuk price: agree it first, including bags.
- Whale boats: if a cruise is the reason you are going, ask the operator for the boarding time the day before.
Tuk-tuk benchmark (26 October 2026): the Western Province rate of Rs 110 for the first km and Rs 90 per km after is explained in our tuk-tuk fares guide. Mirissa is outside that province, so agree the price first. East of Matara, Dickwella has the Hummanaya blowhole.
