Is April a good time to visit Sri Lanka?

Quick answer: Yes, but April is the month the seasons flip. Rain returns to the west and south coasts and the hills, while the east coast and the north become the driest parts of the island: Trincomalee averages 48.1 mm in April against 248.9 mm in Colombo. Plan around Sinhala and Tamil New Year on 13 and 14 April 2027, when much of the country takes a holiday.

Sri Lanka Tourism calls March and April the first inter-monsoon, a "transitional period with afternoon thunderstorms. Warm and humid", and from May it points beach travellers to "Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, and Jaffna" (Sri Lanka Tourism weather page). April is the hinge between the two. Before April, read Sri Lanka in March. For the whole year, see the best time to visit Sri Lanka guide.

What is the weather like in April, coast by coast?

Wet in the south-west and the hills, dry in the east and north. The table uses the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals published by the US National Centers for Environmental Information (WMO normals, Sri Lanka stations). "Rain days" counts days with at least 1 mm.

The flip in numbers. Colombo goes from 102.7 mm in March to 248.9 mm in April. Galle goes from 89.9 mm to 201.9 mm. Over the same month, Trincomalee goes from 54.8 mm to 48.1 mm and Batticaloa from 70.3 mm to 52.6 mm.

A caution on the Cultural Triangle. Sri Lanka Tourism says the first inter-monsoon is "ideal for visiting the cultural triangle and hill country". The long-term averages are less kind: Anuradhapura averages 180.1 mm and 11 rain days in April, about three times its March total, and the Kandy station 189.1 mm. Rain here tends to come as afternoon storms, so climb Sigiriya and tour the ruins in the morning.

When is Sinhala and Tamil New Year 2027?

Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 April 2027. The Central Bank's 2027 list gives 13 April as the day before Sinhala and Tamil New Year and 14 April as New Year's Day, both bank, public and mercantile holidays (CBSL bank holidays 2027). Bak Full Moon Poya Day follows on Tuesday 20 April 2027.

With two holidays in a row, it can be hard to find a driver or a train seat. Book transport for 12 to 15 April before you fly, carry some cash in case banks and ATMs are busy, and expect some small restaurants to close for a day or two. The festival calendar has the rest of the year.

Can you still see whales in April?

Yes, on both coasts. April is the last month of the Sri Lanka Navy's southern season, which runs from Galle from November to April before the ship moves to Trincomalee for May to October (Sri Lanka Navy). The International Whaling Commission's handbook lists March to July for blue whales off Trincomalee (IWC handbook). With the south getting wetter, April is a good month to try the east. On 17 October 2026, whalewatching.navy.lk listed the seasonal calendar and did not state a pause; confirm sailings there. Compare options on the Mirissa destination page.

How busy is Sri Lanka in April?

Quiet for foreign visitors, busy for local travel. SLTDA counted 135,643 tourist arrivals in April 2026, down 22.3% from 174,608 in April 2025 (SLTDA monthly arrivals 2026). That makes April one of the lowest months in SLTDA's 2026 table so far, with only June lower at 124,551. Around New Year, though, buses, trains and beach towns fill with Sri Lankan families.

Retreat prices start to shift too. Barberyn Ayurveda Resorts' winter rates run to 14 April 2027, and its summer rates in 2026 began on 15 April (read 17 October 2026). See Ayurveda in Sri Lanka for the dated price table.

Is April a good month for a family trip?

It can work well with three adjustments:

  1. Base the beach days on the east coast. Trincomalee averages 4.2 rain days in April, against 12.6 in Colombo.
  2. Do outings in the morning. Afternoon storms are common in the west, the hills and the Cultural Triangle.
  3. Avoid travel on 13 and 14 April 2027. Book any long transfer for another day.
