Four Days in Sri Lanka

A 4-day Sri Lanka plan from Colombo airport: two nights near Sigiriya for the rock and the Dambulla cave temple, one night in Kandy, then back to the airport. Road times for every leg, the official airport taxi rate, a bus-only cost sum and the 28 October rain warnings. Checked 28 October 2026.

Worn ancient stone steps climbing a dry-zone granite slope past plain carved stone slabs and scattered frangipani flowers in warm golden-hour light.

What can you do in Sri Lanka in 4 days?

Quick answer: Four days covers Sigiriya, the Dambulla cave temple and Kandy at an easy pace. Sleep two nights near Sigiriya and one in Kandy, and you drive about 380 km in total. By private car from the airport the first leg is Rs 28,188 on the airport's fixed-fare card, and the bus-only version comes to under Rs 2,000 a person on our sum.

This plan sits between our 3-day itinerary, which stays in the Cultural Triangle, and our 5-day itinerary, which adds Colombo. The extra day here goes to Kandy instead of Polonnaruwa, and the page focuses on what each leg costs.

What does the 4-day plan look like?

How much does a 4-day trip cost to get around?

These are dated samples from official tables, not quotes. Hotels, food and tickets are extra.

By private car. The airport's fixed-fare taxi card, read on 28 October 2026, lists these air-conditioned car fares from the airport:

From the airport toCard fare
SIGIRIYARs 28,188
DAMBULLARs 24,192
HABARANARs 27,000
KANDYRs 21,384

The card covers one-way trips that start at the airport. It does not say how many people or bags a fare covers, or if expressway tolls are included. Each extra kilometre beyond the destination you ask for is Rs 130, says the airport taxi page. For days 2 to 4, there is no official price list. Most visitors hire a car and driver for the whole trip; agree the full price, nights for the driver and the return to the airport in writing.

By bus. Our sum for one person on normal buses, using official fares:

LegBusFare

Total (without Sigiriya to Kandy)Rs 1,937

For a faster ride, the NTC expressway table lists Colombo to Kandy at Rs 1,230 and the air-conditioned luxury fare on route 1 is Rs 1,018. NTC tables give fares, not times. Our Colombo to Sigiriya guide and Kandy to Sigiriya guide explain each leg, and our Sri Lanka bus routes guide explains how to read the tables.

How do you plan day 1, arriving at the airport?

The drive to Sigiriya is about 145 km. If you land early and feel fine, you can stop at the Dambulla cave temple on the way: the airport to Dambulla is about 128 km (2 hours 15 minutes), and Sigiriya is 17 km further. Most people are better off going straight to the hotel. Our Colombo airport to Sigiriya guide covers the arrival in detail.

How do you spend day 2 at Sigiriya and Dambulla?

Climb Sigiriya as early as you can, before the heat and the crowds. Rest at midday. In the afternoon, drive 17 km to the Dambulla cave temple. Wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees for the temple, and take your shoes off at the entrance. Our Sri Lanka entry ticket prices guide lists ticket prices and opening times with the date we last checked them.

How do you spend day 3 in Kandy?

The drive to Kandy is about 89 km, almost all on the A9 through Matale. Leave after breakfast and you reach Kandy around lunch. Spend the afternoon at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and walk round the lake. Our Kandy page has more to do if you have time.

What should you check before the drive on day 4?

The OpenStreetMap route from Kandy to the airport on 28 October 2026 ran north on the A10 through the Kurunegala area and then down the E04 Central Expressway: about 112 km and just under 2 hours with no traffic. Add a large buffer for your flight.

Frequently asked questions

Is 4 days enough for Sri Lanka?

It is enough for the Cultural Triangle and Kandy, not for the whole island. This plan gives Sigiriya and Dambulla a full day and adds one night in Kandy. Ella, the south coast and the north need more days.

How much driving is this 4-day plan?

About 380 km on OpenStreetMap routes checked on 28 October 2026: 145 km from the airport to Sigiriya, 17 km each way to Dambulla, 89 km to Kandy and 112 km back to the airport.

How much is a taxi from Colombo airport to Sigiriya?

The airport's fixed-fare taxi card, read on 28 October 2026, lists SIGIRIYA at Rs 28,188 for an air-conditioned car. The card covers trips from the airport only, so agree the price of the other legs with your driver in writing.

Can you do this 4-day trip by bus?

Yes, but it is slower and you change buses. Our sum of official fares for the airport bus, route 6, route 549/499, route 1 and the airport bus again is Rs 1,937 a person on normal buses, plus the Sigiriya to Kandy leg, which has no single fare we could confirm.

Should I do Sigiriya or Kandy first?

This plan does Sigiriya first so the long drive from the airport comes on day 1, when you are fresh, and Kandy is the shorter run back to the airport. You can reverse it; the total distance is almost the same.

Can I add Ella to a 4-day trip?

Not without cutting something. Sigiriya to Ella is about 183 km and nearly 4 hours by road on our 28 October 2026 sample. If Ella matters to you, use a longer plan such as our 8-day hill country and south coast itinerary.

Is late October a good time for this trip?

Check the warnings every day. On 28 October 2026 the NBRO landslide warning, valid until 4 pm, had amber alerts in five Kandy district areas and every Kegalle district area, and the Met forecast expected several spells of showers in Kandy district.
