Can you combine Sri Lanka and the Maldives in 10 days or 2 weeks? (Checked 11 October 2026)

Yes. On a 10-day trip, give Sri Lanka about six days for one focused route (Sigiriya, Dambulla and Kandy) and the Maldives about four. Over two weeks, add Ella and Galle for about nine days in Sri Lanka, then five in the Maldives. Put the Maldives last: Sri Lanka has the early starts and road transfers, and the island days work best as the rest at the end.

Day counts are planning shapes, not minimums. Flight times, resort transfers and the exact split depend on the dates you book.

Which order works best for a honeymoon?

Sri Lanka first, Maldives last. Sri Lanka's highlights involve climbs, temple visits and road transfers between bases. A Maldives resort stay is mostly time on one island. Ending there gives you the quiet days just before the long flight home, rather than a sightseeing circuit after the beach.

Reverse the order only when the flights make it clearly simpler, or when a festival or booking in Sri Lanka falls late in your dates. If you do, keep the Sri Lanka part slower, because you will start it already tired from travel.

What does the 10-day itinerary look like?

DaysWherePurpose
1NegomboArrive and sleep near the airport
2 to 3Sigiriya and Dambulla areaSigiriya early, then the Dambulla cave temple
4 to 5KandyThe Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the lake
6Kandy to Colombo areaTransfer for the Maldives flight
7 to 10MaldivesResort stay, then fly home

This is a cultural-triangle route, so it suits couples who want heritage and temples before the beach. If you would rather have tea country, swap Sigiriya and Dambulla for Ella, but do not try to fit both into six days. The classic 10-day itinerary shows what a full ten days in Sri Lanka alone looks like.

The Central Cultural Fund price list, updated on 14 October 2026, shows a full Sigiriya ticket at USD 35 (LKR 11,760), payable in rupees at the day's rate. It does not list the cave temple's own admission. Check both on the day you visit.

What does the 2-week version add?

DaysWherePurpose
1NegomboArrive
2 to 3Sigiriya and Dambulla areaRock fortress and cave temple
4 to 5KandySacred city
6 to 7EllaHill country and the Nine Arch Bridge
8 to 9GalleThe fort and the coast
10 to 14MaldivesFly from Colombo, resort stay, fly home

Two weeks lets you keep the hill country and the coast without one-night stops. It follows the same order as the two-week standard-pace itinerary, but drops Polonnaruwa, Yala and Mirissa to free five nights for the Maldives. For the Kandy to Ella leg, check the current rail position in the Kandy to Ella train guide and keep a road fallback.

How do you get from Sri Lanka to the Maldives?

Fly from Colombo to Male. The Maldives' main international gateway is Velana International Airport, run by the government-owned Maldives Airports Company. SriLankan Airlines, Sri Lanka's national carrier, sells Colombo to Male flights on its own site, and it also sells London to Colombo flights. We could not confirm schedules, flight times or fares from an official source on 11 October 2026, so this page does not quote them.

From Velana, the resort arranges the last leg. Ask your resort which transfer it uses and how late it runs, then pick a Colombo departure that arrives in time. If the Colombo to Male flight is on a separate booking from your UK flight, leave a generous gap between them.

What entry rules apply for UK travellers?

Sri Lanka. All foreign visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorization before arrival, applied for on eta.gov.lk. The United Kingdom is one of the 40 countries whose 30-day tourist ETA has been free since 25 May 2026, with double entry within the 30 days. The UK Foreign Office says your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival. The full rules are in our Sri Lanka ETA guide.

Maldives. The UK Foreign Office says British tourists get a 30-day visa on arrival, and that the passport must be valid for at least one month after arrival. Maldives Immigration also asks for:

  • a free IMUGA traveller declaration, submitted within 96 hours before arrival, for each traveller including children;
  • a confirmed return or onward ticket;
  • a prepaid, confirmed booking at a registered facility; and
  • enough funds for the stay.

Customs. The Foreign Office warns that it is illegal to bring alcohol and pork products into the Maldives. Do not carry duty-free alcohol from Colombo or the UK.

Flying home via Colombo. The Foreign Office says you do not need a Sri Lankan visa to transit by air when the connection is within 24 hours. If you want a night in Colombo on the way home, the free ETA's double entry covers it only within the original 30 days.

When is the best time to combine Sri Lanka and the Maldives?

January to March is the simplest overlap. The Maldives Meteorological Service describes two seasons: the south-west monsoon, the wet season, normally from mid-May to November; and the north-east monsoon, the dry season, from January to March. December and April are transition months.

Sri Lanka Tourism's beach holidays page says the south-west coast is sunny with a calm sea from November to March, and its travel tips page describes the central highlands as relatively dry from January to April. Outside those months, the Sri Lanka route still works, but choose the coast by season using our best time to visit guide. No month guarantees sunshine in either country.

What should honeymooners check before booking?

  1. Book the international flights first, then the Colombo to Male flight to fit them.
  2. Apply for the Sri Lanka ETA on eta.gov.lk only, then submit IMUGA in the 96 hours before you reach the Maldives.
  3. Ask the Maldives resort for its transfer method and the latest arrival time it can collect from.
  4. Pack for temples as well as the beach: Sri Lanka Tourism advises modest dress at religious sites. See what to wear in Sri Lanka.
  5. Keep a spare half day before the Male flight in case a road transfer runs late.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do Sri Lanka and the Maldives in 10 days?

Yes, if Sri Lanka gets one focused route. Spend about six days on Sigiriya, Dambulla and Kandy, then fly from Colombo to Male for about four days. Adding the hill country or the south coast as well turns most Sri Lanka days into transfers; that fits better in two weeks.

Should you visit Sri Lanka or the Maldives first?

Most couples are better off doing Sri Lanka first and the Maldives last. Sri Lanka involves early starts, climbs and road transfers, while a Maldives resort stay is mostly rest, so ending there leaves the quieter days before the long flight home.

Do UK citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka and the Maldives?

For Sri Lanka, yes: apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization on eta.gov.lk before you fly. It has been free for UK nationals since 25 May 2026 and is valid for 30 days with double entry. For the Maldives, the UK Foreign Office says British tourists get a 30-day visa on arrival, but every traveller must submit the free IMUGA traveller declaration within 96 hours before arrival.

How do you get from Sri Lanka to the Maldives?

By air from Colombo to Male (Velana International Airport). SriLankan Airlines sells Colombo to Male flights on its own site. Check the schedule for your date, then book the resort transfer from Velana with your resort.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka and the Maldives together?

January to March is the simplest overlap. The Maldives Meteorological Service describes January to March as the Maldives dry season, and Sri Lanka Tourism's beach holidays page says the south-west coast is sunny with a calm sea from November to March, and its travel tips page describes the central highlands as relatively dry from January to April. No month guarantees weather in either country.
