Negombo
Use Negombo only when the confirmed flight and onward route make it a useful arrival base; do not assume every airport-area address is equally convenient.

Sigiriya
Two full days covers the rock fortress climb and the Dambulla caves without rushing either.

Kandy
The last of Sri Lanka's royal capitals, and the start of the hill-country rail line further south.

Ella
Road from Kandy to Nanu Oya, then the Nanu Oya to Ella train, because Kandy station is closed to trains until the Peradeniya bridge is restored (checked 14 October 2026).

Galle
A change of pace from the hills: a fortified old town rather than a natural landscape.

Mirissa
A short stretch of beach time to close the trip before heading back toward Colombo or Negombo.
Is 10 days enough for Sri Lanka?
Yes. Ten days is enough for the classic loop: Sigiriya and Dambulla, Kandy, the hill country around Ella, and two nights on the south coast. It uses 6 bases, so expect a check-out every second day. How should you spend days 1 to 3?
Day 1. Sleep near the airport. If you land early and want a beach first, Bentota is a quiet alternative, but it adds a longer drive north on day 2.
Day 2. Drive to the Cultural Triangle and visit the Dambulla cave temple late in the day, when it is cooler. The Dambulla guide compares bases near the caves and Sigiriya. Cover shoulders and knees.
Day 3. Climb Sigiriya at opening time. The CCF listed the full ticket at LKR 11,760 (US$35) on 14 October 2026.
How should you spend days 4 to 7 in Kandy and Ella?
Days 4 and 5. Drive to Kandy and visit the Temple of the Tooth. Foreign tickets were LKR 3,000 on the temple's FAQ, sold only by the temple's machines.
Day 6. As of 14 October 2026 trains do not run into Kandy station while the Peradeniya bridge is restored (Kandy to Ella train guide). Drive to Nanu Oya and take the Nanu Oya to Ella train. The alternative is Kandy to Ella by road.
Day 7. Walk Little Adam's Peak early and see the Nine Arch Bridge. Ella gets more rain days than the coast, so start early.
How should you spend days 8 to 10 on the south coast?
Day 8. This is the longest drive of the trip. Leave Ella early and reach Galle Fort for sunset on the walls.
Day 9. Move to Mirissa for the beach, or to Ahangama for a surf lesson. From November to April whale trips sail from Mirissa harbour; the Navy said its own cruises were paused for maintenance in October 2026. The south coast region guide compares the beach towns.
Day 10. Drive to the airport on the expressways and leave a time buffer.
When is the best time for this route?
December to March. Sri Lanka Tourism calls December to February the peak season on the south-west coast (Sri Lanka Tourism weather page). Read Sri Lanka in January for rain by town and Sri Lanka in December for Christmas and New Year. From May to September, the east coast and Arugam Bay are in season instead.
What should you cut first if it feels rushed?
- Choose Galle or Mirissa, not both.
- Drop the second Kandy night.
- Keep Sigiriya and the Ella train; they are the reasons most people take this route.
What should you book first?
- Flights and your ETA (visa guide).
- A car and driver for days 2 to 9, with fuel arrangements agreed (is Sri Lanka safe explains the fuel quota).
- The Nanu Oya to Ella train seat as soon as booking opens.
- South coast rooms early for December and January.

Can you take the train from Kandy to Ella on a 10-day trip?
Not from Kandy station as of 14 October 2026, because the Peradeniya railway bridge is being restored. Drive from Kandy to Nanu Oya and take the Nanu Oya to Ella train, which runs. Check the status before you travel.
Can I add a beach at the start instead of the end?
Yes. Bentota is about 61 km south of Colombo Fort by rail and works as a first night, but you then drive back north to Dambulla. Ending on the south coast is usually simpler.
What should I cut if 10 days feels rushed?
Cut one of Galle or Mirissa first, then one Kandy night. Keep Sigiriya and the Ella train, which are the highlights most people come for.
