Sri Lanka in July and August
July and August are the south-west monsoon months, so the east coast, the north and the Cultural Triangle are dry while Galle and the hills stay showery. Weather for 12 stations, the Kandy Esala Perahera pattern, 2027 Poya dates and Trincomalee whale cruises, checked 20 October 2026.

Is July or August a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
Quick answer: Yes, if you base your trip on the east coast, the north or the Cultural Triangle. July and August fall in the south-west monsoon, so Arugam Bay, Trincomalee and Jaffna are dry and hot while Galle and the hills stay showery. August is also the usual month for the Kandy Esala Perahera, and Trincomalee runs whale cruises.
This page covers both months because the weather pattern is almost the same. If your dates start in June, see Sri Lanka in June. If they run into the autumn, read the best time to visit guide for September onwards.
What is the weather like in July and August?
Sri Lanka Tourism's weather page describes May to September as the south-west monsoon: "Heavy rainfall on the southwest coast and hills. Best time to explore the dry zone: Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, and Jaffna." The 30-year averages show how big the gap is.

For 2027: the temple had not published dates on 20 October 2026. The procession is tied to the Esala and Nikini lunar months, so expect late July or August, and do not book a Kandy hotel for the Perahera until the temple's schedule is out. The final Randoli night is the busiest. Our festival calendar lists the other big events.
