Sri Lanka Wellness: 7 Days on the South Coast
A slow 7-day wellness itinerary with one base in Weligama: a licensed Ayurveda programme or a surf-and-rest week, with short trips to Unawatuna, Galle Fort and, in season, Mirissa. Dated retreat prices checked 17 October 2026.

Day by day
- Day 1
Weligama
Seven nights at one base. Arrive, check in and have your first consultation if you booked an Ayurveda programme. Weligama has three Ayurveda-named providers on Sri Lanka Tourism's Safe and Secure list.
- Day 4
Unawatuna
Optional half day: a quiet swim at Jungle Beach or a walk up Rumassala hill, about 23 km west by rail. Ask your physician first if you are on a treatment plan.
- Day 5
Galle
Optional late-afternoon walk on the ramparts of Galle Fort, about 29 km west by rail.
- Day 6
Mirissa
November to April only: an early whale-watching boat from Mirissa harbour, under 5 km east. Skip it if your programme asks you to avoid long boat trips.
What does a 7-day wellness week in Sri Lanka look like?
Quick answer: Stay in one place. This plan uses a single base in Weligama on the south coast for all seven nights, so you do not lose days to transfers. Choose either a licensed Ayurveda programme, where a physician sets your treatments, or a lighter surf-and-rest week. Add one or two gentle half days out, to Unawatuna, Galle Fort or, from November to April, a whale boat from Mirissa.
Why one base? Barberyn's offers require a stay of at least a week with treatment, priced per day, after a first consultation. Moving hotels mid-week breaks that rhythm. Weligama works as a base because it has three Ayurveda-named providers on Sri Lanka Tourism's Safe and Secure list, a calm bay with beginner surf, and short rail hops to Unawatuna, Galle and Mirissa. Read Weligama for the bay itself.

What is the day-by-day plan?
| Day | Ayurveda programme | Surf-and-rest week |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive, check in, first consultation | Arrive, walk the bay, early night |
| 2 | Treatments as prescribed; rest | Beginner surf lesson in the morning |
| 3 | Treatments; a short walk on the beach | Second lesson; afternoon rest |
| 4 | Treatments; optional quiet half day at Jungle Beach, Unawatuna, if your physician agrees | Half day at Unawatuna: Jungle Beach and the Rumassala walk |
| 5 | Treatments; optional sunset walk on Galle Fort's ramparts | Galle Fort in the late afternoon |
| 6 | Treatments; rest (whale boats are long and early, so ask first) | November to April: early whale boat from Mirissa |
| 7 | Final consultation and advice for home | Last lesson or a slow morning, then depart |
On the half days out, keep it short. The Southern Province tourist bureau suggests visiting Jungle Beach "early in the morning or late in the afternoon" and recommends sunrise or sunset walks on Rumassala hill (Ruhunu Tourist Bureau, Unawatuna).
How much does a 7-day wellness week cost?
There is no standard price, and many resorts do not publish rates. Here is one dated sample from a rate page that does, read on 17 October 2026 (Barberyn rates). The page did not state the resort's town, so confirm the location before you book. Euro to rupee figures use the Central Bank's buying rate for 16 October 2026 (1 euro = LKR 365.01) and are rounded.
| Seven nights, one person, Garden Room | Room, full board | Treatment | Total | About (LKR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summer rates (until 30 Nov 2026) | 7 x 200 = 1,400 euros | 7 x 100 = 700 euros | 2,100 euros | 767,000 |
| Winter rates (1 Dec 2026 to 14 Apr 2027) | 7 x 200 = 1,400 euros | 7 x 110 = 770 euros | 2,170 euros | 792,000 |
| Two sharing, summer, per room | 7 x 255 = 1,785 euros | 2 x 700 = 1,400 euros | 3,185 euros | 1,163,000 |
The same page said prices included full board, consultations, treatment as prescribed, yoga and airport transfers, with air conditioning at 15 euros a day extra. It also listed a 10% room-rate reduction for 1 to 19 December 2026 and 15 March to 14 April 2027, and a "pay one night, stay one night free" room offer for week-long stays with treatment in summer. Offers change, so get the total in writing.
For a surf-and-rest week, the dated costs we could check were lessons: Party Wave Surf Camp listed group lessons at LKR 5,000 and private lessons at LKR 6,000 on 17 October 2026 (Party Wave Surf Camp). Four lessons at LKR 5,000 is LKR 20,000, about 55 euros. We did not check room prices for this plan.
When is the best time for a south coast wellness week?
December to March for the driest weather, but any month works for an indoor programme. Galle is the nearest long-term weather station (WMO normals):
| Period | Galle rain | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| December to March | 71.1 to 175.9 mm a month; February driest | Beach, surf, whale boats (November to April) |
| April | 201.9 mm | Last whale month; shoulder rates at some retreats |
| May to November | 161.9 to 344.5 mm a month | Indoor Ayurveda programmes; lower summer rates at Barberyn |
Month detail is in Sri Lanka in February, Sri Lanka in March and Sri Lanka in April.
How do you get there and around?
| Leg | How | Distance or fare |
|---|---|---|
| Airport to Weligama | Road via the expressway, or train from Colombo Fort | Colombo Fort to Weligama by rail: LKR 1,100 / 550 / 280 (1st / 2nd / 3rd) |
| Weligama to Unawatuna | Train or tuk-tuk | 23.3 km by rail |
| Weligama to Galle | Train or tuk-tuk | 28.9 km by rail |
| Weligama to Mirissa | Tuk-tuk or train | 4.7 km by rail |
Rail distances and fares come from Sri Lanka Railways' fare table (fare PDF), dated July 2022, read 17 October 2026. Some retreats include airport transfers; Barberyn's rate page did. For other options, see the Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa guide.
What should you check before you book?
- The licence. Under SLTDA Regulation No. 3 of 2019, an Ayurveda tourist health care centre must be registered with SLTDA, with a physician certified by the Department of Ayurveda or the Ayurveda Medical Council, and the certificate on display (SLTDA Regulation No. 3 of 2019).
- The full price. Ask whether treatment is compulsory and charged per day, and whether air conditioning, transfers and taxes are extra.
- Your health. Tell the physician about any medicines and conditions, and talk to your own doctor before you go. This page is not medical advice.
- Your entry. Every visitor needs an ETA; see the Sri Lanka visa guide.
How does this week fit a longer trip?
Add it to the end of a touring trip, when rest is most welcome. The 3-week Sri Lanka itinerary finishes on the south coast, and the south coast itinerary covers the towns east of Weligama.
Frequently asked questions
Is 7 days enough for an Ayurveda retreat in Sri Lanka?
Seven days is the shortest stay many programmes are built around. Barberyn's published offers on 17 October 2026 required at least one week with treatment. A physician sets the plan after a first consultation, so ask how many nights they recommend before you book.
How much does a 7-day wellness retreat in Sri Lanka cost?
One dated sample: on 17 October 2026, Barberyn Waves Ayurveda Resort listed a Garden Room for one person at 200 euros a night full board plus 100 euros a day for treatment until 30 November 2026. Seven nights is 2,100 euros, about LKR 767,000. Many resorts do not publish prices, so ask for a written quote.
Where is the best place for a wellness retreat in Sri Lanka?
Most licensed Ayurveda centres on Sri Lanka Tourism's Safe and Secure list are on the west and south coasts, including Beruwala, Weligama and the Galle area. This plan uses Weligama because it combines a calm bay, Ayurveda providers and easy day trips.
When is the best time for a wellness week on the south coast?
December to March is the driest stretch. On the WMO normals for Galle, the nearest long-term station, February averages 71.1 mm of rain and October 344.5 mm. Treatments happen indoors, so a retreat also works in wetter months, often at lower rates.
Can you combine Ayurveda and surfing in one week?
Sometimes, but ask your physician whether surfing fits your treatment plan. If you want both, choose a surf-and-rest week instead of a clinical programme; Weligama surf schools listed beginner lessons from LKR 5,000 on 17 October 2026.
How do I know an Ayurveda centre is licensed?
SLTDA's Regulation No. 3 of 2019 requires Ayurveda tourist health care centres to register with SLTDA and to have a physician certified by the Department of Ayurveda or the Ayurveda Medical Council, with the certificate on display. Ask to see both before you pay.
Are there yoga retreats in Weligama?
Yes, there are yoga schools and retreats in the area, and Barberyn's published rates included yoga. We did not verify any specific yoga school or its prices for this page, so check teacher training and ask for a dated quote.
How do you get to Weligama from Colombo airport?
By road on the expressway, or by train from Colombo Fort on the Coast Line. The Sri Lanka Railways fare table lists Colombo Fort to Weligama at LKR 1,100 first class, LKR 550 second and LKR 280 third. That table is dated July 2022.
