Sri Lanka in February
February is the driest, busiest month on Sri Lanka's west and south coasts and in the north. Weather for 12 towns in C and F, the February 2027 holidays and Navam Perahera dates, whale and kite seasons, checked 17 October 2026.

Is February a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
Quick answer: Yes. February is the driest stretch of the year on the west and south coasts and in the north, and Sri Lanka Tourism counts it in the southwest coast's peak season. Galle averages just 71.1 mm of rain and about 6 rain days, Jaffna only 25.9 mm. It is also the busiest month, so book early, and save the east coast for May to September.
Sri Lanka Tourism's season chart puts December to February in the north-east monsoon and calls it the "peak tourist season on the southwest coast. Clear skies, calm seas" (Sri Lanka Tourism weather page). February is the last and usually the driest month of that window. Coming earlier? See Sri Lanka in December. Going later? See Sri Lanka in March.
What is the weather like in February, coast by coast?
Dry and hot almost everywhere except the east. The table uses the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for 12 Department of Meteorology stations, published by the US National Centers for Environmental Information (WMO normals, Sri Lanka stations). "Rain days" counts days with at least 1 mm of rain.
| Coast or area | Station | Average high | Average low | February rain | Rain days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| West coast | Colombo | 31.6 C (89 F) | 23.6 C (74 F) | 77.4 mm | 5.1 |
| South coast | Galle | 30.7 C (87 F) | 23.7 C (75 F) | 71.1 mm | 5.8 |
| Deep south | Hambantota | 31.5 C (89 F) | 23.6 C (74 F) | 47.4 mm | 4.0 |
| North | Jaffna | 30.7 C (87 F) | 21.7 C (71 F) | 25.9 mm | 2.3 |
| North-west coast | Puttalam (Kalpitiya) | 32.3 C (90 F) | 21.7 C (71 F) | 42.1 mm | 4.2 |
| Cultural Triangle | Anuradhapura | 32.2 C (90 F) | 22.2 C (72 F) | 60.1 mm | 4.3 |
| Kandy | Katugastota | 30.2 C (86 F) | 18.7 C (66 F) | 78.1 mm | 6.1 |
| Hill country | Nuwara Eliya | 21.0 C (70 F) | 10.2 C (50 F) | 72.7 mm | 6.7 |
| Ella area | Badulla | 27.2 C (81 F) | 17.5 C (64 F) | 102.3 mm | 8.1 |
| East coast, north | Trincomalee | 30.1 C (86 F) | 24.3 C (76 F) | 96.1 mm | 4.7 |
| East coast, centre | Batticaloa | 29.3 C (85 F) | 23.9 C (75 F) | 148.5 mm | 6.6 |
| East coast, south | Pottuvil (Arugam Bay) | 30.6 C (87 F) | 22.8 C (73 F) | 136.8 mm | 7.7 |
Fahrenheit is converted from Celsius and rounded. A station is one point, so a nearby beach can be a little wetter or drier.
Three things to take from the table:
- The north is at its driest. Jaffna averages 25.9 mm and just 2.3 rain days, the lowest in the table. February is a good month to add Jaffna.
- The hill country is clear but cold at night. Nuwara Eliya averages 10.2 C (50 F) after dark. Pack a fleece for the trains and for Adam's Peak.
- The east coast is drying out but not ready. Trincomalee averages 96.1 mm over only 4.7 rain days, so a short stop works. Batticaloa (148.5 mm) and Pottuvil for Arugam Bay (136.8 mm) are still wet.
Where should you go in Sri Lanka in February?

What festivals and holidays fall in February 2027?
Two public holidays and Colombo's biggest February procession.
| Date | Event | Type | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thu 4 Feb 2027 | Independence Day | Bank, public and mercantile holiday | Expect closures and busy roads; a long weekend for many families |
| Fri 19 and Sat 20 Feb 2027 | Colombo Navam Maha Perahera, Gangaramaya Temple | Temple procession | Two nights of drummers, dancers and elephants in Colombo; roads near Beira Lake get crowded |
| Sat 20 Feb 2027 | Navam Full Moon Poya Day | Bank and public holiday | Temples are busy; banks close |
Sources: the Central Bank's 2027 bank holiday list and Gangaramaya Temple's official site, which lists the 2027 Navam Maha Perahera for 19 and 20 February 2027 (both read 17 October 2026). The festival calendar has the full year.
Navam Perahera tip: if you land in Colombo that weekend, plan one night in the city to see it rather than heading straight for the beach. Dress with shoulders and knees covered near the temple, and keep to the crowd barriers.
Is February good for whale watching and kitesurfing?
Yes to both, on different coasts.
Whales off Mirissa. The Sri Lanka Navy's southern cruises run from November to April (Sri Lanka Navy), and the International Whaling Commission's handbook says blue whales are seen off Mirissa from December to March (IWC handbook). February sits in the middle of both, with the calmest weather of the season. On 17 October 2026, whalewatching.navy.lk listed the seasonal calendar and did not state a pause; confirm sailings there. The Mirissa destination page compares Navy and private boats and their prices.
Kitesurfing at Kalpitiya. Kiteclub Kalpitiya gives its winter season as mid-December to mid-March, with wind that "picks up in the afternoon, fluctuating between 15 and 25 knots" and mornings free for dolphin and whale trips (Kiteclub Kalpitiya). The Kalpitiya guide has dated lesson prices.
Adam's Peak. Sri Lanka Tourism says the Sri Pada pilgrimage season runs from December to May (Sri Lanka Tourism, Sri Pada). Avoid Poya day on Saturday 20 February 2027 if you want a quieter climb.
How busy is Sri Lanka in February?
The busiest month of the year so far. SLTDA's monthly table shows 279,328 tourist arrivals in February 2026, up from 240,217 in February 2025, an increase of 16.3%. It is the highest monthly total in SLTDA's 2026 table to date, just ahead of January's 277,327 (SLTDA monthly arrivals 2026).
What that means for you:
- Book south coast rooms early, especially in Unawatuna, Mirissa and Weligama, and around the 4 February long weekend.
- Reserve train seats as soon as booking opens. The Kandy to Ella line was not running through as of 17 October 2026; the Nanu Oya to Ella train guide covers the section that runs.
- Start sights early. Sigiriya, Dambulla and Galle Fort are calmer before 9 am.
- Fix your driver or tours before you fly if you are travelling over Navam Perahera weekend.
What should a February route look like?
February suits the classic west, centre and south loop, with the north as an add-on.
| Trip length | Suggested shape | Why it works in February |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | Negombo, Sigiriya and Dambulla, Kandy, then Unawatuna or Galle | Every stop is in its dry season |
| 10 days | Add the hill country by road to Nanu Oya, then the train to Ella | Hill mornings are usually clear |
| 14 days | Add Mirissa for whales and Weligama for surf | Peak blue whale window |
| 21 days | Add Jaffna or Kalpitiya | Driest north and the winter kite season |
The day-by-day version for a long trip is the 3-week Sri Lanka itinerary. Before you book, apply for your ETA with the Sri Lanka visa guide and compare flights in the direct flights guide.
What should you pack for February?
- Light, loose clothes for the coast, where highs are about 30 to 32 C (86 to 90 F).
- A warm fleece for Nuwara Eliya, Ella and Adam's Peak, where nights drop to about 10 C (50 F).
- Clothes that cover shoulders and knees for temples and the Navam Perahera.
- Strong sunscreen and a hat; February has the fewest rain days of the year on most coasts.
- Seasickness tablets if you plan a whale trip; ask a pharmacist before you go.
