Sri Lanka in March
March is the month both coasts work: the south is still dry and the east is drying out. Weather for 12 towns in C and F, the March 2027 holidays, whales on two coasts and quieter crowds, checked 17 October 2026.

Is March a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
Quick answer: Yes, especially if you want both coasts in one trip. On the long-term averages, every station in our 12-town table gets under 105 mm of rain in March: the south coast is still in season and the east coast around Trincomalee is drying out. Expect heat and some afternoon storms, and slightly fewer visitors than in February.
Sri Lanka Tourism places March and April in the first inter-monsoon, a "transitional period with afternoon thunderstorms. Warm and humid, ideal for visiting the cultural triangle and hill country" (Sri Lanka Tourism weather page). In practice, March keeps most of February's dry weather but adds heat. Coming earlier? What is the weather like in March, coast by coast?
Hot everywhere, and dry enough almost everywhere. The table uses the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals published by the US National Centers for Environmental Information (WMO normals, Sri Lanka stations). "Rain days" counts days with at least 1 mm.
| Coast or area | Station | Average high | Average low | March rain | Rain days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| West coast | Colombo | 32.0 C (90 F) | 24.8 C (77 F) | 102.7 mm | 7.7 |
| South coast | Galle | 31.6 C (89 F) | 24.6 C (76 F) | 89.9 mm | 6.9 |
| Deep south | Hambantota | 31.9 C (89 F) | 24.3 C (76 F) | 47.0 mm | 4.0 |
| North | Jaffna | 32.8 C (91 F) | 23.4 C (74 F) | 42.5 mm | 3.9 |
| North-west coast | Puttalam (Kalpitiya) | 33.5 C (92 F) | 23.4 C (74 F) | 56.9 mm | 4.5 |
| Cultural Triangle | Anuradhapura | 34.8 C (95 F) | 23.5 C (74 F) | 62.1 mm | 5.0 |
| Kandy | Katugastota | 32.0 C (90 F) | 19.9 C (68 F) | 97.6 mm | 6.8 |
| Hill country | Nuwara Eliya | 22.3 C (72 F) | 10.8 C (51 F) | 72.2 mm | 7.1 |
| Ella area | Badulla | 29.7 C (85 F) | 17.7 C (64 F) | 87.6 mm | 7.2 |
| East coast, north | Trincomalee | 31.7 C (89 F) | 24.8 C (77 F) | 54.8 mm | 4.0 |
| East coast, centre | Batticaloa | 30.8 C (87 F) | 24.5 C (76 F) | 70.3 mm | 4.7 |
| East coast, south | Pottuvil (Arugam Bay) | 32.0 C (90 F) | 23.4 C (74 F) | 61.4 mm | 5.3 |
Fahrenheit is converted from Celsius and rounded. A station is one point, so nearby beaches can differ.
What the table tells you:
- The wettest station in March is Colombo, at 102.7 mm. In January the wettest station in the same set gets more than 260 mm. That narrow spread is what makes March a "both coasts" month.
- The east is opening up. Trincomalee falls from 96.1 mm in February to 54.8 mm in March, over just 4 rain days. Batticaloa drops from 148.5 mm to 70.3 mm.
- The dry zone is very hot. Anuradhapura averages a high of 34.8 C (95 F). See Sigiriya and the ruins at opening time.
- The hills are pleasant. Nuwara Eliya averages 22.3 C (72 F) by day, warmer than in February.
Which coast should you choose in March?
You do not have to choose. A March trip can go south first, then cross to the east.
| If you want | Go to | Why in March | Read next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue whales in the south | Mirissa | Last month of the IWC's December to March window off Mirissa | Mirissa |
| Sperm whales and early blue whales in the east | Trincomalee | IWC lists March for sperm whale aggregations and March to July for blue whales | Trincomalee |
| A sheltered swim near Galle | Unawatuna | Galle station averages 89.9 mm | Unawatuna |
| The last kite weeks | Kalpitiya | Kiteclub's winter season ends mid-March | Kalpitiya |
| Ruins without rain | Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa | Anuradhapura averages 62.1 mm; go early for the heat | Anuradhapura |
| The far north | Jaffna | 42.5 mm on average | Jaffna |
| Arugam Bay surf | Too early for the main season | Pottuvil averages 61.4 mm, but the surf season is later | Arugam Bay |
Sri Lanka Tourism's season chart lists May to September as the "best time to explore the dry zone: Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, and Jaffna" (Sri Lanka Tourism weather page). March is the shoulder before that, so the sea on the east can still be lively. The east coast vs south coast guide explains how the two coasts swap seasons.
What holidays fall in March 2027?
Four bank and public holidays, from four faiths. Expect busy roads and closed banks on each.
| Date | Holiday | Type | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sat 6 Mar 2027 | Mahasivarathri Day | Bank and public holiday | Hindu festival of Shiva; expect busy Hindu temples |
| Wed 10 Mar 2027 | Eid-ul-Fitr (Ramazan Festival Day) | Bank and public holiday | Muslim festival at the end of Ramadan; banks close |
| Mon 22 Mar 2027 | Medin Full Moon Poya Day | Bank and public holiday | A long weekend; temples busy, banks shut |
| Fri 26 Mar 2027 | Good Friday | Bank and public holiday | Christian holy day; another long weekend |
Source: the Central Bank's 2027 bank holiday list, read 17 October 2026. The festival calendar has the full year. Medin Poya and Good Friday create two long weekends (20 to 22 March and 26 to 28 March 2027), so expect busier roads and book transport for those days early.
Can you see whales in March?
Yes, and March is the one month when both whale coasts overlap. The International Whaling Commission's handbook lists blue whales off Mirissa from December to March and off Trincomalee from March to July, and sperm whale aggregations in March off Kalpitiya and Trincomalee (IWC handbook). The Sri Lanka Navy runs its southern cruises from November to April and moves to Trincomalee from May (Sri Lanka Navy). On 17 October 2026, whalewatching.navy.lk listed those seasons and did not state a pause; confirm sailings there.
Compare boats and prices on the Mirissa destination page. Sightings are never guaranteed.
How busy is Sri Lanka in March?
Quieter than the peak. SLTDA counted 183,979 tourist arrivals in March 2026, down from 229,298 in March 2025, a fall of 19.8%, and about a third below February 2026's 279,328 (SLTDA monthly arrivals 2026). SLTDA's table does not give a reason, so do not assume the same drop in 2027.
Some retreats also price March as a shoulder month. Barberyn Ayurveda Resorts listed a 10% room-rate reduction for 15 March to 14 April 2027 for guests staying at least a week on its treatment plan (read 17 October 2026). See Ayurveda in Sri Lanka for the full price table.
What should a March route look like?
| Trip length | Suggested shape | Why it works in March |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | Sigiriya and Dambulla, Kandy, then Trincomalee | Dry zone and east are both dry; start sights early |
| 10 days | Galle and Unawatuna, Mirissa for whales, then the hill country | Last month of the Mirissa blue whale window |
| 14 days | Cultural Triangle, Trincomalee, Kandy, hills, south coast | Both coasts in one loop |
| 21 days | Add Jaffna and Kalpitiya | North at its driest; last kite weeks |
For a full day-by-day plan, use the 3-week Sri Lanka itinerary. Hill country note: the Kandy to Ella line was not running through as of 17 October 2026. Go by road to Nanu Oya and take the Nanu Oya to Ella train. Apply for your ETA first with the Sri Lanka visa guide.
What should you pack for March?
- Light, breathable clothes and a wide hat; dry zone highs reach about 35 C (95 F).
- A light rain jacket or umbrella for afternoon storms.
- A warm layer for Nuwara Eliya nights, about 11 C (51 F), and for Adam's Peak, which is still in its December to May pilgrimage season (Sri Lanka Tourism, Sri Pada).
- Clothes that cover shoulders and knees for temples, especially on Poya and festival days.
- A refillable water bottle; heat is the main risk this month.
