Sri Lanka in January

January is dry season on Sri Lanka's west and south coasts and in the north, and still wet on the east coast. Weather by coast in C and F, the January 2027 holidays, the Sri Pada season and arrival numbers, checked 17 October 2026.

Is January a good time to visit Sri Lanka?

Yes, if you plan around the west, the south, the Cultural Triangle or the north. January is in the north-east monsoon, which Sri Lanka Tourism says brings the peak season to the south-west coast (Sri Lanka Tourism weather page). Colombo averages just 79.6 mm of rain in January, less than a quarter of its October total. The one coast to avoid for a beach stay is the east, where Batticaloa still averages 268.9 mm.

What is the weather like in January, coast by coast?

Warm and dry in the west, south and north; cool in the hills; still wet in the east. The table uses the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for 11 Department of Meteorology stations, published by the US National Centers for Environmental Information (WMO normals, Sri Lanka stations). "Rain days" counts days with at least 1 mm of rain.

"Average high" and "average low" are the mean daily maximum and minimum for January. Fahrenheit is converted from Celsius and rounded. A station is one point, so a nearby beach can be a little wetter or drier.

Three things stand out. Jaffna is the driest station in the table, so January is a good month to add the north. Nuwara Eliya nights average 10.4 C (51 F), and the station recorded a January low of 2.1 C in the normals period, so pack a warm layer for the hill-country trains. And Badulla, the station for Ella, still averages almost 12 rain days, so plan Ella hikes for the morning.

Which coast should you choose in January?

The west and south for beaches, plus the north if you want fewer crowds. Sri Lanka Tourism's seasonal advice calls December to February the peak season on the south-west coast and points beach travellers to the east coast from May to September (Sri Lanka Tourism weather page).

What holidays fall in January 2027?

Two public holidays, both on Fridays, so expect long weekends and busy roads.

DateHolidayTypeWhat it means for you
Fri 15 Jan 2027Tamil Thai Pongal DayBank, public and mercantile holidayTamil harvest festival; expect family travel and busier roads
Fri 22 Jan 2027Duruthu Full Moon Poya DayBank and public holidayThe UK FCDO says alcohol is not usually available on religious holidays; banks close

Sources: the Central Bank's 2027 bank holiday list and the 2027 holiday gazette, No. 2493/05 of 16 June 2026. Independence Day follows on Thursday 4 February 2027. The festival calendar has the full year.

On a Poya day, plan a beach or a nature day rather than a big temple visit. If you are visiting the Dambulla cave temple or the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, go on a different day and dress with shoulders and knees covered.

Can you climb Adam's Peak in January?

Yes, January is inside the pilgrimage season. Sri Lanka Tourism says the Sri Pada pilgrimage "takes place between the months of December to May each year" (Sri Lanka Tourism, Sri Pada Pilgrimage). The Adam's Peak page covers the climb itself. Sri Lanka Tourism notes that near the top people may wait in line for up to half an hour at the busiest times.

Two practical points. First, avoid weekends and Friday 22 January 2027 (Duruthu Poya) if you want a quieter climb. Second, Nuwara Eliya, the nearest hill station in our table, averages 10.4 C (51 F) at night in January, and the summit is higher, so bring a warm layer, a torch and water.

How busy is Sri Lanka in January?

Busy. SLTDA counted 277,327 tourist arrivals in January 2026, up 9.7% from 252,761 in January 2025 (SLTDA January 2026 report). SLTDA's 2026 table shows only February 2026 was busier, at 279,328 (SLTDA monthly arrivals 2026).

What that means in practice:

  • Book south coast rooms early, especially for the first half of January, when Christmas and New Year stays run over.
  • Reserve train seats for the Kandy to Ella line as soon as booking opens. The Kandy to Ella train guide shows how.
  • Start sights early. Sigiriya and the Dambulla caves are calmer before 9 am.
  • School holidays: Australian families are still travelling. New South Wales summer holidays run from 18 December 2026 to 27 January 2027 (NSW Department of Education). UK schools are back after the first week of January.

Can you see whales in January?

January is in the Sri Lanka Navy's southern whale-watching season, which it lists as November to April, sailing from Galle (Sri Lanka Navy whale watching). On 16 October 2026 the Navy said its cruises were paused for routine ship maintenance with no restart date. Check the Navy page again in December. Private boats sail from Mirissa harbour; see the Mirissa guide for the harbour and the whale page for what to ask an operator.

What should a January route look like?

January suits the classic loop, because nearly every stop is in its dry season at once.

Trip lengthSuggested shapeWhy it works in January
7 daysNegombo, Sigiriya and Dambulla, Kandy, then the south coastCultural Triangle and south coast both dry
10 daysAdd Ella by train and two beach nightsElla mornings are usually clear

The day-by-day versions are the 10-day classic Sri Lanka itinerary and the two-week Sri Lanka itinerary. Both list dated costs.

Before you book. Compare nonstop and one-stop options in the direct flights to Sri Lanka guide, apply for your ETA with the Sri Lanka visa guide, and pick a data plan with the Sri Lanka eSIM guide. For the hill country leg, the Nanu Oya to Ella train guide covers the section of the line that runs now. Arriving earlier in the season? See Sri Lanka in November.

What should you pack for January?

  • Light, loose clothes for the coast, where highs are about 30 C (86 F).
  • A warm fleece or jacket for Nuwara Eliya, Ella and Adam's Peak.
  • Clothes that cover shoulders and knees for temples.
  • Sunscreen and a hat; January has few rain days on the coast, so sun exposure is high.
  • A light rain jacket for Ella and the hills, where rain days are higher.
  • Insect repellent. Germany's foreign office reported more than 70,000 dengue cases in Sri Lanka in 2026 (checked 17 October 2026). See is Sri Lanka safe for the health advice.
